Wow, an 8 from oxm?

Anyway, pretty close on my predictions so far. Need GT. come onnnn GT.

Sounds like the surprise of the year, am kinda doubtful but...theres a lot of positivity.
They seem to have kept a lot back preview wise so maybe stuff happens later.

Oh awesome, that 9 on IGN is from Keza Macdonald, a reviewer I've come to find is pretty reliable for me.
It was her review of MGS3 (hmm, I think it was 3) in games™ that made me want to get into the series (although I still haven't played 3, heh). Will add it to the list - have been interested since the initial reveal, although I haven't paid much attention since then.

You know what... good for Crystal Dynamic. I hope this game does well for them.

Since it seems Nixxes have handled the PC port, I'll be picking it up down the line knowing it's at least a decent port.

I don't think it was a surprise to those that looked at the game for what it was and not for what they wanted the game to be.

It seemed to be a competent action game with some puzzles sprinkled on to it. Throw in some narrative and you have the Tomb Raider reboot.

A game can get a 10 it doesn't always mean its to everyone's tastes.

Pretty glad it's been we'll recieved, the initial gameplay demo fron way back had real promise. Just need to find out which console has the better version.

holy cr*p! i've never actually seen any footage of the game, but thats pretty gorey... o.o

i predict 7-8's and a few 9s across the board.

incidentally, is 7 really a bad score? :p

How can one predict the present and still predict incorrectly?

It seems to be getting in 8-9 range, which is excellent. I had no expectations, but I love Crystal D's work. So, I may be in at day 1.

I've only read the Kotaku review so far but there was no mention if all these modern game elements they introduced actually worked, or if they're balanced well. All they did was mention these elements are in the game and then spent 75% of the review talking about Lara as a person and her growth or dialogue.

I feel like we're focusing on the wrong things in this industry sometimes.

I'll say a Tomb Raider rewrite until I play it. So far its looked like a ridiculous shit narrative with little attention or understanding of the strengths of its main influence (Casino Royale).

Does sound like the action itself is competent and fun. The adventure side might be a bit Resi4'ish; we'll see. Still a shame the Lara side has been awfully handled but the game sounds like it might be fun from the final impressions.

Am pretty sure their still getting subsidised by their sister site; just seems a ridiculous premise for a site.
Which is a shame as their output has improved of late.

yeah it's looking alright

"Croft’s body also takes an amazing amount of punishment for her to continue to not only function, but fight effectively, but you can say the same about most action films. These are well-established tropes and shortcomings of most games and movies. It’s not surprising to see Tomb Raider fall into these traps, but it’s also fair to keep hoping for a game to design its way around them."

my qualms are being eased by some of these reviews. i may play this eventually after all.

So at this point picking up Eidos has been basically the one great thing Square have done this gen, right? :p

Square Enix's Western arm (ie. Eidos) has been pretty rad between stuff like Just Cause 2, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Sleeping Dogs and now this.

Great game.

Bad Tomb Raider.

I'll probably still get it. But they need to add Short Shorts DLC.

Cool. Glad it sounds like it turned out alright.

This part from the Polygon review makes me interested in it:

Tomb Raider still employs some of the cinematic touches popularized this generation, but their execution doesn't limit players. Lara isn't magnetized to grab nearby surfaces when she jumps near them. She doesn't run into invisible walls preventing her from climbing any higher. Outside of scattered set piece moments, the closest Tomb Raider ever gets to funneling players down a single path is blocking certain areas in ways that can't be cleared until Lara has found the right gear upgrades.

Seems like a really positive reception, especially considering that this series is not really loved by critics.
I'm glad that the game is not heavily scripted past the first introduction hour.

Excerpt from the PA review.

The missteps are small and few, and the triumphs are many and large. Tomb Raider re-introduces us to the character of Lara Croft, explains how she came to be the hero we know from earlier games, and then sets her on her way to more adventures. The game’s final line, and the tiny hint at a possible sequel if you know where to look, do a great job at capping off a fulfilling adventure. I walked away from the game as the credits rolled like one walks away from a grand meal: Feeling satisfied and refreshed.

Seems like a good game.

It’s got the linear, cinematic spectacle of Uncharted, with the narrative fleshed out by audiologs borrowed from BioShock. Platforming is Drake by way of Ezio Auditore, and combat borrows from, well, take your pick.
