Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review Thread

Here is my written review over at ZTGD 8.5:

I didn’t know what to think. I was worried, not sure how things would go, and honestly didn’t expect to love it as much as I do, and here I am gloating about my time with it. Syndicate isn’t the best Assassin’s Creed game, but it’s one of the better entries, featuring new abilities, tighter focus, and bringing the fun and variation back into the gameplay when I had just expected to be worn out with the franchise. It’s still Assassin’s Creed to its core, and won’t bring in any new people or those that completely have tired from the franchise. Yet I can proudly say Syndicate sits right behind Assassin’s Creed 2, Brotherhood, and Black Flag as my favorites out of the franchise.

yeah no way this thread is going without a wall of shame, you guys are embarrassing. you'd like to think its some top tier trolling but no one can be that skilled

Many great looking games with rocky solid framerate.

Seems like the sites who are giving low scores are biased and want to get along with the recent bad previews. I think this is a good game overall and deserves to be around 80+ easily.

Videogamer 5/10

After the shit storm they brewed up i never expected anything different.

Can't believe how some outlets can give this a 9. That's bordering on dishonest, seriously WTF?

Here's the problem with numbering scales for me. IGN gave the broken piece of trash Unity a 7.8 while giving this one an 8.2. But then you read this from their Verdict:

Black Flag is terrific. But according to your score, you're saying Syndicate is only slightly better than Unity. I'll wait to see GAF complain about it. I'd like to play this game but I'm not going by reviews after Unity.

Ubisoft must have paid then good money.
Seriously though, I can believe the 8/10 reviews though.

Looks like you don't get review copies anymore if you give AC games bad scores.

dat gamespot review seems so out of touch with reality it's almost sad.

lol french magazine getting all french salty because syndicate is the better game and is set in London and not in glorious Paris like unity

Seems like the bigger sites are all very impressed with it while the smaller review sites are taking issue with it. Is the game is really that divisive? When Game Informer gives it a 9 and someone else gives it a 5? What' going on here?

But then when you have some sites listing "no multiplayer" as a negative, I know what to think of that review. For me, no multiplayer is a plus. Get that junk out of the game and focus on the single player campaign.

It's hard to take serious Gamespot's review, why didn't let somebody else review it?

I'm literally dieing of laughter. Why don't they take sometime to develop the game, whats the rush??

5 sounds like the most honest review so far.

Just wait and play the game, pretty sure frame rate is crap and it's full of bugs, we all know how most reviews ignore those points we here are crazy about.

Am I wrong?

This ship is going down guys. But it's about time.

When did lazy devs become not a thing?

If you are developing a game with the levels of jank that Assassin's Creed games commonly have, and just figure "Eh, it's good enough" - lazy devs.

A studio like Naughty Dog or Rockstar Games would have people pulling their hair out over an NPC floating in the air. For Assassin's Creed developers it's just Tuesday.

Witch of these reviews can we actually trust?
I mean, I think some sites may receive money to give better scores...

I like how AC's twitter only mentioned the 9/10 reviews.

Arkham City released two years after Arkham Asylum. Someone's not working hard enough.

There were many 8/10 reviews, which is why highlighting only 2 reviews that make your game look awesome is funny to me. It is not much better than Destiny promoting BioGamerGirl.

Paid off shills.

Gamespot and IGN giving high scores for money wouldn't surprise me honestly. Seems Ubisoft didn't have money for IGN this time around, was expecting a 9 from them.

We all know GameInformer is a shill publication, so I am not surprised by them.

They all seem to work for big gaming media outlets. It seems outside the realm of coincidences.

this game is ugly as sin

If you give me a free laptop, I'm sure I would like them more.
What's funny about that? My current laptop was bought around 2006.

How it works is that you get treated well if you review games highly. If you make honest opinions like Jim Sterling with Konami or Jeff with Kayne and Lynch 2, you might be blacklisted or fired. Let's not just act like blacklisting doesn't exist for reviewers.
It isn't really paid reviews like we joke about, but there is a fear of blacklisting.

Also Kotaku didn't get a review copy which is funny to me. Perhaps Ubisoft was worried about a NO verdict?

I just think its funny that the bigger the review site....the higher the score seems.

Wide range of scores. The cynic in me says the high scores were money hatted, but the optimist in me.....fuck that, I'm going with money hatted.

It's more like people close to UbiSoft like the game.
Normal folks don't like the game.

I'm a normal guy, so I'll wait for $20.

They wasted no time making a video that included their review scores from GameSpot and Game Informer.. it's almost as if they already knew what the score was going to be.

That's is your opinion.

Statistically, something is not right here. That is not an opinion.

Obviously we don't know what's behind the dichotomy, but it's clearly not something random.

All the teams wearing blue advancing to the MLB's playoffs is a random event.
Most black Americans voting for Obama isn't. You can say it's just opinions. That doesn't make it so.

What are the reviews saying about the jank? I've gotten to the point with the series where I just can't stomach the multitude of things that don't work as they intended. In the past I could accept it, "Well it is the Animus, there would be bugs", but no longer.

Who has played the game and not encountered a floating NPC, or a naff inability to climb something you should be able to, or dead bodies that move erratically for no reason?

Syndicate doesn't get everything right. It doesn't solve all of the series' problems, and at this point, I'm not sure if any one game could
and still scores with a 8,5
lol

The overall impression that I am getting is that this will sit nicely alongside Black Flag as entries that stepped outside of the standard AC box the most and ended up being all the better for it.

Did a ctrl-f on that Gamepot review to see if there was anything "bug" related. Nothing at all. The word does not appear in the review even as a reference to the past game! There is no way in hell this game does not have bugs in it, especially a review build that might be pre-patches. It's a gushing love letter to the game as well. There doesn't seem to a single critical look at the game in that review, just pure praise with each paragraph. I don't mind positive reviews but WTF!? That's not a review at all. It's a PR fluff piece.

What in the....what in the fuck man? Did you really just say that? Did you really just make an extremely offensive allusion to generalized stereotypical racial biases in comparison to inconsistency with game scores? Are you ok? Many insurance providers cover therapy, just so you know.

Well it straight up proves that a numerical metric is pretty much useless. You score it an 8.5 against the fellow games in the series but it's all but impossible to know how it stands against other games. Apples and oranges.

Also, remember y'all. High review scores only matter when you agree with them!

(from Metacritic)

this should totally be on the GOTY edition.

Getting a new TV, hopefully tomorrow, and Monday is Austria's national holiday. Would love something fresh to sink like 30hours into while just wearing sweatpants. I'll wait for some more reviews and just do an impulse purchase on Saturday.

Uh, what reviews did you read? All the ones I've read so far have mentioned Unity and the issues it had.

Let's get out the tinfoil hats, boys.

Edit: just noticed Gamespot has been put in.

One of the most hit or miss games I've seen reviewed in a while. Not sure why people are trying to blatantly to shit on AC, wouldn't you want the game to be good not bad?

You don't know how much it pleases me to know they're playing down the modern day part of the story.

I actually loved Unity, and one of the things that made me really enjoy it was the lack of bullshit hamfisted forced-in dead-end "future story".

Still waiting until Syndicate is cheap on PC first.

Ubisoft pandering to people with these thoughts has soured the franchise for me quite a bit.

The series has lost its narrative thrust and I couldn't care less about the shit I do as an assassin because what the hell does it even matter with no future pay off.

I wish the devs could find a happy medium to satisfy both sets of fans, but hey they caved and still sell gangbusters every year.

Some covered it a bit. I did and I feel that there is a bit less "Map Mess" going on here then prior games and a lot of that is how the side missions are connected to the overall theme. You still do end up collecting things but even the world design helps that along a bit.

Looks like the game is pretty solid. I am actually glad. I have loced what i have seen of Evie so i will pick this up soon.

This is the problem I had as well. I quite liked the future story, especially when they were clearly building towards something at the end of AC3 (the ending of AC2 is still my favourite part of the series). IMO they should have cut it completely after that but they decided to half-ass it to keep it going. It's now absolutely pointless, they should be all-in or all-out.

Wow this is a really pleasant surprise. I was thinking 7's across the board but I'm glad to hear it's more streamlined and fun. Will definitely be playing this.

MGSV doesn't get everything right and is an excellent game still.
Witcher 3 doesn't get everything right and it doesn't solve all the issues of Witcher 2, but it's my favorite RPG ever.

Think I'll wait to see what word of mouth it like for this, I have too much to play currently anyways.

I'm already sold on the setting though.

Yes.

Collect all of the Pressed Flowers.

Collect all of the Historical Posters.

Collect all of the Royal Letters.

So wait a minute....this is good?

There is a difference between good and reviewers willing to overlook things and give a positive score. Things that the average customer might not. So better to wait until some take one for the team as they say and report back.

Even Wild Hunt is still loaded with bugs, long loading times and graphical glitches galore. But guess what? It is still one of the greatest games I have ever played. Just maybe they did not encounter anything beyond the usual open world jank that they felt took away from the overall experience. BTW, it is not the only positive review.

Too many other games coming out soon that I will spend my time with. I loved Black Flag and the London setting has me interested, but I think i'll hold off until it comes down in price.

That is unless GAF tells me it's awesome, then I'll jump straight in!

Ridiculous.

1. "Don't believe this set of reviews because... Because." Really?

2. They are all flawed games. But they're also all decent games, some of which are almost great. None of them are truly bad or the sales and reviews would reflect this, and would have since day one. Which they don't and haven't.

Reviews have made me a little bit excited to be honest. This was the first AC game that I was seriously considering avoiding but it sounds like it's a solid entry and removes all the dross of Unity as well. That and I forgot about my preorder so it'll be here tomorrow. :p

If it legitimately hits the heights of AC2 and AC4 I'll be surprised. Those two were brilliant.

I know it's not the only positive review. Gamespot however is the outlet that I feel has the most suspect reviews and is hypocritical. That's why I looked to see what they did in their "review".

That's why I also said in another post that reviewers are willing to overlook things (that would give a more balanced review.) that the average customer that has to buy the games themselves might not or would not.

Black Flag was awesome. I remember being completely soured on the series after AC3 and decided to pick up AC4 on a whim to have something to play on my PS4. I'm so glad I did.

I might check this one out at some point. Although I got burned on Black Flag which I thought was pretty overrated. The boat stuff was fun but the missions and story were awful. I especially dislike the tailing missions. Are those still a prominent staple in this one?

Negative. A couple but easily doable. And due to how one in particular playes out and its locations. Fairly fun.

Gamepro: 87/100

They are utterly surprised by the game. Missions and the world design are very good and they call it the best AC since ACII ... I really wanted to dismiss the game but reading through the different reviews is confusing me. What to do...
Pretty much in agreement with everything there except the bugs were too much for me to ignore but the plain and simple fact is the game is damn fun and the mission content is highly enjoyable. You can tell that a lot of care went into the world building which isn't always a guarantee here.

Nice! I was picking this up regardless of scores. But, now I'm actually more hyped! An Assassin's Creed done well is always a good thing. Nice little surprise to my day, good job UBI.
