EA: Xbox One branding will help Battlefield 1; doesn't turn other console owners away

When a game partners with a console you don't own, does that put you off the game?

EA reckons no, it does not.

EA, which has partnered with Microsoft for first-person shooter Battlefield 1, has run the numbers, and the numbers say everybody wins when it comes to these sorts of deals. At an investor day, EA boss Andrew Wilson was asked whether he was concerned about Battlefield 1's association with Xbox One in the context of rival console PlayStation 4 currently enjoying a reported 2:1 install base lead.

"Our console partners want to stand right next to the biggest and best games in the industry," Wilson responded.

"Typically what we see is that just aids awareness. It aids awareness whether you're a PC gamer or an Xbox gamer or a PlayStation gamer. What the console partner hopes to achieve is some disproportionate awareness around the game as it relates to their particular console."

"But what we have seen - and we've seen the analytics against it - is if you're a PlayStation gamer, you do not reject it because it is brought to you by a potential console parter.

"You understand deeply it's also available on your console. And what we get is just a multiplier effect of greater awareness in the marketplace."

Xbox branding seemed to work just fine for The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4.

It's comarketing money. I don't really see why it'd be a problem. It's not like we didn't see this for around a decade so far.

Yeah, pretty sure R6 Siege on PS4 outsold the XB1 ver despite the marketing.

In the end, I do not see branding really mattering. Playstation has Call of Duty marketing now, but hasn't Xbox One been the top selling platform for that game in America pretty much every month since launch?

Division was tied to Xbox One but it sold more on PS4, correct?

Remember those games are bundled with consoles and aren't counted in NPD results.

I might've been the only person who thought Battlefield 1 would be a remake of the first Battlefield when I heard of it for the first time.

But yeah I don't think the branding will really matter one way or another. Fully expect the PS4 version to outsell the Xbox One version.

For casuals I think it can make a difference. With StarWars Battlefront I know some people that picked up a PS4 for that game because of the commercials. They weren't even aware of it being out on Xbone. Anecdotal of course but hadn't experienced that with any other game before.

For EA it makes sense. They get extra marketing that they don't have to pay for.

Casuals have both consoles?

The only time it puts me off is exclusive or delayed DLC. I own all the consoles, but it's so distasteful that I just end up not bothering half the time.

Marketing deals are great. usually increases the budget so the game gets more exposure and the consoles get a little advert at the end too.

It matters to MS and Sony, but it doesn't hurt publishers to go one way or the other.

I agree with the US market, it is not a big deal as the difference isn't too big. You are hurting yourself in other markets if you start doing exclusive content for xb1 going forward like the fifa exclusive mode must hurt when you are losing on a bigger install base.

Yup thats why EA did comarketing with Sony for Hardline and Battlefront.

Wait...
I think Sony/EA kinda backed off hardline marketing and battlefront is due to Disney/Sony relationship. It is pretty obvious EA has a vested interest in MS due to EA access.

Is he trying to imply the opposite happens on XO or am I just reading into that statement?
not to sound like a smart A, but I doubt bundle sales of cod in february, march, and april are giving it the edge over the xbox version.
You dont sound like that - but I would definitely advise you to check the figures...

I honestly thought Battlefield 1 was Xbone exclusive solely based on the name.

Then again, I thought "Eh, I don't play Battlefield anyway," so I doubt that I (or others like me) matter very much.

As long is it's not one of those dumb deals where publishers aren't allowed to talk about their port for another console that is eventually coming out anyway, I don't really care who does the comarketing.

Only have a PS4 and this is probably the first Battlefield game I'll ever buy. Both Companies do marketing deals all the time so I doubt this'll affect anything

It's an EA game so it will happen, not really surprising anymore lol. Just like Mirror's Edge and every other EA game.

I hope they say the beta is avail through ea access when they allow that free period from june 12-22.

would be an amazing bday gift :p
even though they don't really care about me, i'll pretend LOL

Exactly. It's just part of the business and it's been part of the business for years.

i've always seen it like this.

sony are ahead by a lot. and have a fanbase already, so they don't need the help creating awareness for the third party games on that system. xbox, however does. both publisher and manufacturer are set to benefit for that partnership. sony and EA will already benefit by having the better performing version on a console with the bigger install base. that ground is covered as far as EA is concerned. no point preaching to the converted.

It doesn't matter to me as long as they don't do the 30 days exclusivity on season pass content. I really hate that practice.
Exactly. I'm perfectly fine with marketing shenanigans. But don't give group A earlier access to DLC (CoD, Division) or block content all together (Destiny) for group B.

I'm a little confused as to why any publisher would align themselves with microsoft (looking at install base alone). Activision made the right move to switch to the PS4 because it makes sense.

But to be more on topic, I was disappointed when I found out they aligned with X1 for BF1 (I will play on PS4 and PC). I sold my xbox because it was very underwhelming. I found it funny that FO4 aligned with X1, but yet it ran the worst on X1. In fact, it was because of FO4 I sold my xbox. I had an xbox elite and it couldn't even play FO4 @ > 20fps it seemed like. Anyway, this whole aligning with a console is just fine, its the timed exclusive content that is for the birds. I love Destiny and play on PS4, but I still think it is a croc of shit X1 owners have to wait a year for some DLC. This industry makes me sick some times but we can only vote with our pockets...and we all know we wont do that!

free advertising. it's still coming out on ps4. it'll still sell boatloads more on ps4. they just get a bunch of marketing that doesn't cost them a penny now.

If it doesn't affect sales wither way, may as well take the highest bidder.

LOL that's a pretty honest answer :D

"Platform holders hope that by giving money to us our game will sell as if it was exclusive to their platform, but that regularly doesn't happen and we're the only ones benefiting from this" :p

I don't mind those co-marketing deals. They are supposed to associate a game with a certain platform. Some work, like Destiny and some don't, like Division.

I'm assuming it is the same vice versa as well, right? The analysis is showing them that no matter who they partner with, it doesn't matter to the other player bases?

It definitely benefits platform holders. COD and Battlefront helped moved a ton of PS4 this past winter.

Well they are right. The game will probably sell mor in ps4 anyway. It's a win win for them. They get that marketing money and sales from both platforms along with season pass and DLC purchases

It's bad business. You market your game on a larger scale and expect more profit instead of narrowing it down to one platform but stupid people will make stupid moves, that's the way of the game.

900p on both consoles? this is pretty much the only thing that bothers me with Multiplatform games... i dont give a shit if one game gets 3 week exclusive content... but its when parity comes to the party that irritates me.

And when games are comarketed with XB1, im always gonna assume it will be a gimped PS4 version. Am i wrong in assuming that?
