Weird Sony Flex for the PS5 after Offical Teaser Trailer for SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME

That spode man's identity was revealed. And also spoils the plot about them trying to fix it but it goes wrong.

That’s not a spoiler, it’s a set up, it’s the premise of the movie.

Would the trailer for Two Towers be spoilers for the Fellowship of the Ring? It’s a rhetorical question.

Yeah, the amount of views is insane.... must be well over 50 million when all main channels are considered.

Would be great for them if that interest carried over to Venom.
I like Tom Hardy and Woody Harrleson, but the story for Venom has just been butchered. The first film was crap, don't expect much more for the sequel.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
I was focusing on different billboards etc to see the commercial, and then it gets misplaced slapped in the end.

I'm sure people will go out and buy a PS5 controller after watching the spider man trailer.

You are here fucking talking about it. It is effective marketing.

It is called brand association. I can assure you when this movie comes out in theaters you will see PS5 ads play before the movie.

I mean, it would have made more sense if it was a commercial for the spider man game.

It's a commercial for Spiderman. The character is tied to PlayStation going forward. It makes sense to co-market and do brand association. The game is still charting, the movie will be successful, PS5 is selling very well. It makes perfect sense.

Plump marketing, so yes, weird flex. Telling you as someone who gets paid to avoid this kind of shit. But I know how this kind of things happen. Maybe some high rank manager wanted it. You can imagine it like this:

Boss: "Ey, we got Spidy on our Playstation right? Do we have Playstation thing in trailer?"
Expert: "No, it doesn't fits, but we are working ou ..."
Boss: "Put a fucking PlayStation thing right at the end of the trailer. Best idea I ever had!"
Expert: "But ..."
Boss: "Do it!"

Alternatively there is someone on duty who just doesn't care or doesn't knows how to do smart marketing. Communication deparature at Sony always seemed a bit "old fashioned and not so good". So, this also fits.
I imagine that Disney/Marvel also has set strict guidelines here. Relationships don't seem to be the best these days.
I disagree. There are two main factors that decide these types of campaigns: (1) viewers, (2) relevance of audience.
  1. Viewership: You have over 40 million views within 30 hours. It's great.
  2. Relevance: It's within the media industry; movie viewers and gamers aren't always mutually exclusive. Moreover, the Spider-Man IP is popular on both platforms: movies and PlayStation.
This particular marketing campaign fulfill both these criteria. That's why I think it's a great campaign. Personally, I'd have preferred an ad of Spider-Man Miles Morales + PS5 combo at the end, but even this ad isn't out of place.

For comparison, these gaming companies advertise during Superbowl and pay millions of dollars. This is much more relevant and targeted.

P.S. I work in Marketing, and sharing my two cents.

Not Sony's fault you decided to watch the sequel trailer to a movie released in 2019.

On another note I see this as great marketing. When the movie releases in theaters they will probably tack on a 15-30 second Spider-Man focused PS5 ad during the previews. If they really want that synergy make one of the costumes from the movie available to download just like the Raimi suit. This all feels full circle in a way because I distinctly remember the Spider-Man 2 UMD being packaged in with the PSP and I just had to have it in high school. Being able to watch full releases with some special features intact like on DVDs was revolutionary to me. That is until we discovered how to convert movie files to mp4.

Disney: Film deal up, everyone forgets spider man, it’s cannon
Sony: makes more bad spider man movies
Disney: buys back spider man rights, Everyone remembers Spider man again

Sorry OP you got triggered.

It might be an indication that there are
3 Spidermen in the movie ...why don't you suck on that ?

And there's the answer to any questions that people may have had about this being a good move or not.
I know that it seems to puzzle some people why Sony have been so insistent on maintaining their control over their Spider-Man rights but it is very simply a license to print money for them.
For the abundance of superhero films there is right now, the two that major ones are the ones that have traditionally got into the psyche of "normal" people who aren't really into things like that and those two are still Spider-Man and Batman.
Of course, they're still largely reliant on good quality products.
Expect to see far more Sony :messenger_heart:'s Spider-Man moving forwards.

Is it a shortage though? Like a real shortage? They are making the most launch\post launch consoles in Earth's history. How much faster should they be asked to make PS5s? How can they go faster than the fastest in history? This ISN'T a supply problem.

It's a demand problem. There's just too much demand for the PS5 world-wide (except in Japan of course).

Yes, there is a global semiconductor shortage that is affecting not just Sony and other console makers but also the GPUs production lines.

A demand problem is a good problem to have and the pandemic also helped make it a perfect storm where the supply / production lines are restricted and the demand skyrocketed.

Didn't work like that for Shang Chi or The Eternals...

The first 2 Spider-man films were great anyway, way ahead of their time. Blade was very cool back in 1998 too.

I was more talking spider man in the MCU like everyone will remember him again if they get the rights back.

I didn't question the audience but the advertisement itself. The advertisement is completely out of context. Won't say that this kind of ads damages the trademarks, but doesn't support them neither.
As you mentioned, there are many ways to attach an ad in a more organic way. As I said, I assume it has also to do with restrictions from Disney/Marvel. Or just lazy people at work ...

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
They own the movie rights and rights to TV shows longer than 45 minutes. Disney still owns the character.
If by character you mean comic book rights, then yeah and they own merchandising which Sony sold to them, but I believe Sony still get a cut from that.
But the the way you guy's word it is as if Sony is renting the license from Disney.
Disney has never own movie right & has no claim to them either, Sony does

And in this day and age, that's pretty much owning the character because it's the most important rights to have at the moment.
At the the moment Sony don't need any permission from anyone to use Spider Man in Movies.
Disney does.

Sony has the movie rights and rights to the TV shows longer than 45 minutes (so the animated DisneyXD Spider-Man shows are owned by Disney). Spider-Man is a MARVEL character, not a SONY character. Disney/Marvel owns everything else with Spider-Man, INCLUDING the video game rights (which is how Spider-Man was in Ultimate Alliance 3 and every single shovelware mobile title Marvel Games produces).

The movie rights are NOT the most important rights. The merchandise is. Disney makes $1.6 BILLION every year on Spider-Man licensing (clothes, toys, etc.). That's EVERY YEAR. Sony makes a Spider-Man movie every 2-3 years and only one has made $1 billion.

1) But Marvel sold Spider-Man rights including 800 related characters, the shows and merchandising that's why they are in this predicament now.

Same with Hulk, Universal still own the film's rights to that, the green monster is on loan.

2) Sony sold the shows & merchandise rights so outside the comicbook rights that Marvel still own everything Disney owns regarding Spiderman was sold to them by Sony because they obviously didn't care about them as long as they had the movie rights.
Either way, neither are the sole owner.
