So everything happening after ROTJ is pretty much covered in the EU going forward nearly 50 years without much room for breaks.

Is this just going to shit all over that or follow it?

The EU always respected that the prequels were off limits and no books were written in that time period until Lucas did the prequels. I have a bad feeling Disney will not respect EU as Canon.

You saw the Avengers movie?

Did you notice that it has barely anything to do with the state of the marvel comic book universe?

Disney will just throw the EU under the bus to get a good movie, and that'd be a good decision.

So he sold it? Not just licensing rights? At $4 billion, who cares? Never have to work a day in his life, nor his kids, or their kids.

Why are people upset over this?

Disney is one of the few places that i would have complete faith in when it comes to releasing new Star Wars content. The fact it's no longer 100% under the man who shall not be named control anymore is the best news ever.

JJ Abrams and Joss Whedon need to co-direct it. Would be the perfect mix of lore/information/deepness and pure enjoyment.

Adjusting for inflation, and adding international and 3D, if the prequel trilogy were released today, it would have generated 1.5 billion dollars according to the Disney CFO.

Also, the acquisition, while also including Indiana Jones, the price paid was only based on the Star Wars franchise. Which means basically, Disney bought Star Wars, and got Indiana Jones for free, plus ILM and Skywalker sound. Jesus what a steal for them.

This is good news, it gets Star Wars out of the hands of its creator and oddly, that's the best thing to happen to Star Wars in what? Two decades?

No beef with a film every 3 years either, just want them to explore some other time period where Luke Leia and Anakin do not exist.

So many amazing novels that could be made into films

I think you need to go see what the last movie took in world wide. It did a lot, but not a billion dollars.

George Lucas is getting FOUR BILLION DOLLARS, man. Half of that is in cash. CASH. That's 2 thousand million dollars. Most of the world will never, ever see that type of money, and he gets to deposit a check that has 12 zeros before the decimal. What's cray cray about it, is that a large portion of that is going to be in Disney stock. What do you think is going to happen to Disney stock after this news hit? His lineage will that rockafeller money for generations to come.

Mr. Lucas is a stupidly wealthy man that got out right around the time that he wanted to, and has the capital to create absolutely anything he wants. I'm sure he's comfortable with what he's letting go.

Has nothing to do with the movies, merchandising has made more than all the star wars films combined. They have made over 20bil on just action figures and toy alone. This is not counting all other licensing agreements made just for star wars worth billions more.

Holy shit 4 billion is a steal. Disney will make more than that off the first two films and merchandising alone. I'm pretty ok with this. Star Wars isn't some sacred cow and the universe if rife for good new films.

True. Lucas should not be allowed anywhere near the director's chair.

The prequels were abominations.

It's not like Lucas was poor after the prequel trilogy (and the OT... but he might have lost a lot of that money through his divorce, idk). I mean, that shit was all indepedently financed right? So he probably made a shitton of money from there. This is probably George just coming to his senses after the prequel disasters and the shitty Indy IV to ensure that he has a legacy through more Star Wars films.

Which is a mistake, imo, but hey, no mistake that gets you $4bn can really be that bad.

There's a decent amount of Star Wars presence in Disney theme parks already. Star Tours ride at MGM Studios (Hollywood Studios), which includes a big Star Wars gift shop. Plus they have a whole line of Disney / Star Wars mashup action figures (Pete Boba Fett for the win).

Listening to the conference call they've said their sole reason for purchasing LucasFilm was to own the Star Wars brand in order to make films. Other LucasFilm properties are just a bonus.

This is terrible. I wonder what else Disney offered to get George to sell. You would think the super lucrative continued merchandising and licensing of Star Wars meant LucasFilm is worth more but I guess maybe not.

Would like to see what Pixar could do with some of those Lucasarts IPs. Day of the Tentical first please!

Also, they should have let George make a few new movies first then got it for half the price later on.

The most important thing in this news is: "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."

REAL DIRECTORS ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO MAKE STAR WARS MOVIES

THIS.

And now that disney has the rights....the original theatrical should be on its way to blu ray!

Edit: Beaten.

Wow, this is quite huge actually. It's so... weird.
Really exciting to see Disney with Star Wars.. especially if they want to produce so many star wars movies.
I wouldn't be surprised to see it 'failing' quality-wise. On the other hand, they have some of the best and highest grossing movies.

Meh. I don't know why anyone would be bothered by this. Would you want another Lucas Star Wars movie or Indy movie?

The George Lucas that made "Star Wars IV: A new hope" has long since gone.

I think the big business dark side angle is valid, but if there was ever a franchise that needed to be flogged and rebooted endlessly it is Star Wars circa 2012.

Fuck. I'd rather see what Disney can do with Indy than Star Wars to be honest. Indy is Pirates of the Carribean only better. As long as they can find someone worthwhile to replace Ford (hard to do).
