Annnnnnnd so is everyone else, even the people being positive. Do the people who are happy about the scores get a free pass on needing to play the game to actually be definitively right about it being good? I guess so.

Hold everyone to the same standard, not just people who "hate" the game.

The difference is that the "good" opinion falls more like "that looks good, I will purchase it". The actual judgment of whether it IS good falls after that purchase and play.

The "bad" line is coming as "this game is bad, it's not Tomb Raider", etc.

One is a summary judgment, the other is not. If somebody said "this doesn't sound like it's my type of game", I don't think anybody would object.

A huge issue coming across here is that some (many?) people aren't able to separate "not for me" from "bad". I don't like Romantic Comedies. They're not for me. Love, Actually is a romantic comedy that's is good. Valentine's Day is a romantic comedy that is bad. On any given day, I'd rather watch Crank. That's how understanding that an entire industry doesn't cater to you works. I'm happy that movies I like and others hate (Crank) are made, just like I'm happy that movies I dislike and others love (Love, Actually) are made. They keep us all happy. I think that there's a feeling of ownership that's keeping some from looking at the final product objectively.

Was gonna ignore the reviews and any hate it got because the developer playthroughs looked great to me, with enough genuine choice and branching paths in it's levels. Surprisingly all the reviews are praising it. Color me surprised :).

Derrick: "The TPS gameplay is tired. The AI is bad. Reviews say this yet give it an 8. I give it a 4."

Reviews: "The combat in general is quite good."

It's getting old, dude. It's not your thing and that's fine, but you're pushing that the mechanics are played out and poorly executed while everyone who's actually played it is saying the polar opposite. It's getting beyond harsh criticism on your part.

Watched the GT review. The graphics are great and the TPS gameplay seems very competent. What I hated was Laura constantly being out of breath, speaking dramatically, crying, moaning while mashing X to remove a sharp object from her ribs. But Far Cry 3 was one of my favorite games last year so I'm ok with annoying/one-trick characterization if the gameplay holds up.

Sit behind chest high walls, pick off guys with bad AI, finish them off with unnecessarily brutal finishing kills.

Been there done that too many times this gen.

So every game needs to have a different jumping mechanic cause pressing a button to lift from the floor has been done too many times. Right.

I wouldn't have played anything from this year until June if I did that. I need something to pass the time here and there.

I haven't made that decision yet. It hinges entirely on my ability to put up with a terrible console version for 10 hours when I have a nice PC sitting in front of me.

And yet you place so much emphasis on highlighting it's faults, and how the gameplay is like a trainwreck, based on preconceived opinions and biases, and talk about how it's everything that's wrong with modern gaming - yet you'll gladly spend money and invest hours in it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you do this with Hitman too?

So we don't have to worry about your subjective opinions shitting up the Infinite or Ascension threads?! Fuckin A!

Whoever creates the Infinite OT should put a tally app in the OP which tells us how many times the words "System" and "Shock" have been used in the thread.

Nope I will be there picking those apart too. Bioshock (and Levine) especially has a lot to live up to after how bad 1 was.

Reviews have never once praised bad games or bad elements before. Nope.

Well, congrats to Tricky. It seems he was right about the quality of the game, at least from an "overall" perspective. His persistence in the face of limitless skepticism is, now, admirable.

It still doesn't interest me much, and there's no way I'm paying full price for it, but now I am more interested to play it at some point. Hopefully before the end of the year, so I can consider it.

Eagerly await Brad from Giant Bomb to weigh in with the Quick Look.

C'mon, if he doesn't play it then how else will he justify leveling criticisms at its gameplay?

Oh. Right.

That's what I'm saying, basing ur opinion on the review text might have some more value to it than basing it on just the score but it's still just as silly. You can't highlight one part of a review just to ignore the other, they go hand in hand, score and text.

For the love of God, please don't buy it.

Glad to see the positive reviews. Hopefully it won't end up being the disappointment that Absolution was, but I do like what I've seen/read for Tomb Raider more than I did for Hitman.

I think he does this to every game he hates. Which is... I think practically every game.

Derrick needs to create a thread detailing exactly what it is he looks for in a game.

Dues Ex and maybe some game that is universally praised that you would look like an ass saying is bad.

But generally in life, it's much much easier to hate. It really devoids all personal attachment to anything so you can never be attacked for your interests, it gets to a point where people actually get excited for not liking a movie/game because they can feel confident in their opinion. It's much easier to justify why you hate something than why you love something... love is awkward and vulnerable. Deep.

Reviews have never once praised bad games or bad elements before. Nope.

And yet you are automatically deciding now that they are in this case.

This has gone beyond the realm of Cynicism and well into the territory of narcissism.

Dues Ex and maybe some game that is universally praised that you would look like an ass saying is bad.

He does that to Bioshock all the time, for no other reason I assume except that Irrational decided to make a fresh franchise instead of return to SS.

I'm liking the cut of this games gib. Especially since the Aussie price for PC is actually pretty damn good.

Looks like I'll be raiding dem tombs one more time.

"Tomb Raider is a bad game"
"Why?"
"Read the reviews"
"Didn't the reviews give the game 8's and 9's and say the positives outweighed the negatives overall?"
"Yeah, it's bad"
"Have you played it even?"
"No"
"??????"
"I still may buy it though"

"it got an 8, they said it was kinda good....sorta, for the most part?"

How could anyone question something so rock solid

Speaking of Hitman I find it funny how everyone is throwing the "you need to play it before saying its bad" line yet again when I was 100% right about that game. It's proof that if you pay attention to what's going on you can accurately make a judgement. We don't live in the era where games only get into a magazine every couple months and that's all we see or hear about it until release.

"Tomb Raider is a game. It has been in production for 4 years. Properly applied, that's how long a good console should last. So Tomb Raider, it's true, you have gotten these scores."

So it seems like, while the game is a good game - as a standalone title - it isn't a "good" Tomb Raider game. That's about what I expected, though it's nevertheless very disappointing.

I hope Crystal Dynamics eventually makes another Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light game. I don't want the old Tomb Raider style of games to be dead. :(

We can expect a wave of cynicism being thrown upon every point in the build up to that release then.

What are you defining or basing 'bad game' on? Your biases? Honestly, if games like this and Hitman disgust you so much, then just ignore them and play something else. I'm not saying that just because you're expressing a negative viewpoint, but because you seem to express a negative viewpoint throughout the course of the thread before even touching the title, and then dismiss anything which may counter your argument as being irrelevant or a mistake on their part.

"This is shit, it will suck"

"Review/Impressions: This is good"

"Looks crap still"

None of the reviews I've read take away any of my fear that this is a game with a 'check the box' design without any real vision behind it. So I can easily see where Derrick is coming from,

Review scores might be good, but it's hard to put much value in those after games like Heavy Rain and Final Fantasy XIII.

It basically sounds like it's DmC Redux. Not a 'bad' game, but not really a good game for the franchise its named after

You said it was bad. It was a good game. You were wrong.

Stop feeding NeoGod, please.
