Question for everyone:

Did you go in expecting the usual Marvel fare? Is that why you lot thought it was boring or something? Because I went in KNOWING it wasn't the usual Marvel fare and still pleasantly surprised!

I went in not expecting the usual MCU film and the very beginning of the film felt different right off the bat.

Can anyone explain Cinemascore to me? I know films get rated A+, A, A- etc but the slips they give out only have A, B, C, D and F. So where do the pluses and minuses come from?

I had never heard of them before but understood after reading the thread. Where it is explained, several times.

A+ -thought it was top level.
A- - thought it was great but needed work.
B+ -enjoyed it and looking forward to more minus a few gripes.
B- -enjoyed it and would watch again but not crazy about it

Etc.

Yep, I understand that.
But the ballot doesn't have options for pluses and minuses.

It was explained why he left... He didn't want to keep lying to Sersi... So he left so that he wouldn't have to.
He explained it a little when they were coming up with that plan to neutralize Tiamut.
So he couldn't take lying to her after finally 5,000 years :messenger_neutral: .
IMOO it would have been best to introduce them in other Marvel movies like the infinity gems. the challenge with Eternals is that their theme is to big. it's a problem in the comics also. they couldn't fit the grand scope of the characters with the more popular and traditional mainstream characters. they had a chance to do that in the MCU but unfortunately they just did the same mistake as in the comics. though this is not an easy thing to do. even the 4th World was difficult to fully merge with the DCU. they just basically cut off the Darkside part and patched it in... maybe there is a sign here, Kirby's spirit resisting assimilation.
With such a large group and a several thousand years of history they could have pretty much have ended up forming their own mcu like universe by introducing the characters in their own movies similar to the mcu.

I don't see any posts explaining how you chose an A+ or B+ on that ballot. Am I blind?

Yes. To going back through the thread where it is explained.

Not saying I'm agreeing with it but it has been explained already.

The Eternals should be shapeshifters. Them having a fixed appearance makes no sense. The speedster girl being a mute makes no sense.
The deviants are lame CGI monsters. The sentient one was a letdown. The movie lacked a good antagonist.

They could've done cool things with Druig's powers.

In the end, they essentially murdered a person to save an ant colony. Cosmically speaking.

Every time Salma Hayek was on screen it felt like I was watching a soap opera.

None of the jokes worked IMO.

Star Fox
looked sooooooooooo bad, and his little elf guy? Did the Black Panther Climax CG Team make him? I can't believe a film as pretty as Eternals (its best attribute) had such a bad looking scene it. Are post credit scenes directed by a different team?

Also why is he human looking? If he's Thano's brother, why isn't he purple? ( I do not read the comics, so I have no clue about this)

Sorry... I didn't see your question... But...

Thanos has the Deviant gene... That's why he looks different from all other Eternals. Like a birth defect. His mother almost killed him because he looked so different from their race but yeah... In the comics, they are actual blood brothers.

It could actually. Apart from the easy explanation "they are created that way for whatever reason" (like Sprite being a teenager), it reminds me of that idea that was considered in one of the Justice League comics (don't remember if it was Kingdom's Come or one of the Frank Miller ones) that Flash could only be heard by Superman because he couldn't emit sounds at a slow enough frequency to be understood, and you'd need super-hearing to perceive what he says.
Makkari obviously has a different perception of sound waves (like when she says she can hear any tiny vibration), so it could translate to her ability to speak (or at least to be heard). Also someone whose power is to be very mobile wouldn't be uncomfortable moving her hands instead of her vocal chords to communicate.

We must be in alternate reality's where Tony Leong's Mandarin was not great? I thought the story, lore, and family dynamic worked better and came across better than Ikaris's arc. It all felt hollow because the source material they are very stoic, so its hard to translate to film. But to each their own. I also am a huge Kung-Fu, iron fist fan so I'm a little bias.
I also enjoyed the story of the Mandarin, but:
I think the ending of this character is very predictable. And the transformation of Katy, from no one to an amazing archer in a few days (hours ?) is ridiculous, in my opinion.

To be clear, I also enjoyed Shang-Chi (the only Marvel movie released this year that I didn't enjoy was Black Widow), but I prefer Eternals.

Actually he didn't know until Ajak told him around when he left ... Which was about 1500 years before the present. I am going to see it again with another homegirl this coming weekend because I may have that wrong, but that's what I remember at the moment.

Hadn't thought about it like that, just thought shelved as cinemas were closed and was a stupid idea to make it as a new potential franchise of those characters. Marvel generally made bad ones work so some failure for them. Iron Man being popular was astonishing as the comic wan't even that popular. Same with GOTG.

Very interesting to see it's fate at this stage. What was the shitty show they did with Arya Stark actress (Maise Williams), I don't remember. Doubt many do, that had the same fate. From Cinema to streaming immediately and simply forgotten.

The New Mutants was the better (but simpler and smaller scale) movie, Eternals is the better concept with a worse execution.

At least by the end of TNM there were a couple of characters I cared about to a degree, Eternals simply bored me to tears, although a few shots were nice to see in IMAX.

If he’s part deviant then why didn’t the Eternals fight him?

I havn't watched it, just knew it kept getting pushed back and then was dumped out, much like this. Read the reactions though to it and they weren't kind. I'm not really interested in them anyway, either. Just like reading about what people think. Like many people 'Endgame' was the last time I was curious enough to care about watching and that was even a push after 'Infinity War'.

New Dr. Strange I am looking forward to.

He's not part deviant. Just like the Celestials created the Eternals, they created the Deviants, too. As I said, it's like a birth defect. Like how some people are born with a vestigial tail or something.

So the 7,000 years was wrong and it was only 500 years. You are probably right since he said he was told in Babylon , I guess after the psychic guy incident.
Wait... this looks 45+ to people?

she does kinda look 40-ish in that pict or at least late 30s.

She definitely doesn't look anywhere near my age (47) ...

She looks like early to mid-30s

On an aside... Thandie Newton has always looked older than her age. She only NOW looks her age.

They were on earth for 7000 years ... They helped develop the Ishtar Gate (that big blue building)... I was talking about when he left ... And you're right. Ajak told him the truth in Babylon but he left 5 or 7 hundred years ago (I miscalculated) because he couldn't continue to lie to her. That part was in South America when the Spanish conquistadors were commiting genocide against the Mayans.

As a diehard fan of Snyder's take on Superhero films as well as a big fan of the mcu (which in my opinion is getting somewhat stale with their latest releases) will I enjoy this film? I read Zhao took inspiration from Man of Steel which excites me and I'm curious if the reviews were right because I find myself enjoying movies that are divisive obviously lol

They went their separate ways around the 1500s or so if my memory serves me right. They were present when the conquistadors invaded the Maya. Sersi and Icarus were probably together for awhile after that then the burden of knowing the truth caused Icarus to leave her. I think Sprite tells Dane they haven't been together for a 100 years but as I recall Sersi says she hasn't seen him in a few centuries?

Yeah, kinda. What age would you give her?
early to mid 30's, no eye wrinkles, clear looking eyes, healthy skin, no real defined laugh lines yet. But really its all in the eyes and movements to me, she looked young

In comparison this is a 39 year old actress and she looks WAYYYY older to me.

Nah, no way she looks early 30s but they did do some good make up on her. Here’s another picture:

Watched it tonight, I thought it was fantastic and would consider it one of the best stand alone marvel movies. All of my nitpickings as far as wanting this to be what the original comics were, it isn't but that really does not matter.

The whole Celestial revelation I thought was brilliant and actually gave a legit reasoning for existing in the universe as it is. Everything was digestible within itself and made full sense as to how they could exist without existing.

My favorite from the comics has always been Makkari and though completely changed in so many ways was in every way as badass and compelling as the comic book character I loved, if anything I felt got marginalized because of placement on the ship but the character/powers was just absolutely badass, wouldn't change a thing!

By the end of the movie I just wanted more and can't wait for where it goes. First Chloé Zhao movie I've seen, to take this genre and make it her own hats off to this girl! I wish I hadn't been so close-minded by the previews based on my loyalty to the source material, Marvel continues to keep this universe fresh and compelling.

I'm glad you saw it for yourself and formed your own opinion. So many just go off lies or rotten tomatoes and think that's it. No one wants to make informed decisions or form their own opinions anymore. Welcome to the MCU Makkari fan club!

As an aside, I loved that the camera STAYED on Makkari when she signed. So many other productions just pivot away or don't show the whole sign... Preferring to let the subtitles do all the talking for the signer. Takes away the chance for deaf fans like myself to not have to depend on written English to know what she's saying.

So she is signing in ASL? Is there an in-universe reason for it (like she brought her language to Earth to become ASL) or is it just like "space english" and don't think too hard about it?

And as a deaf person, how do you feel about public announcements with a sign interpreter versus just reading close captioning? Is there value lost in doing away with an on screen ASL person when CC can translate it to text instead? I'm just curious since it seems like a redundant option these days to me.

First to your second question: ASL isn't signing in English. It has its own grammatical rules, thus it's its own language. There's no 1:1 translation into English.

Plenty of deafies (yes, that's a real word) don't read or sign in English (called PSE or Pidgin Signed English) so having an on-screen interpreter is needed and ideal.

To your first question: I think her character brought ASL to Earth, particularly in France where ASL originated. There's multiple signed languages in the world, ASL is just one of them.

ETA: I appreciated that her family (the other Eternals) could communicate with her in HER language. Many families don't learn sign language when one of their members are deaf. Yes, that includes parents.

Eternals is not a good movie. It’s not a good comic book movie, it’s not a good action movie, it’s not a good Marvel movie. It somehow feels overstuffed and empty at the same time. It’s muddled and convoluted. It’s a bland and boring and bewildering mess. It’s overlong but even with an hour cut out of its running time, Eternal would probably still feel too long. https://www.sootoday.com/columns/aisle-seat/movie-review-eternals-4733615

Wow, the movie tanked at the boxoffice. I found a comscore article that said that 90% of worldwide theatres were opened by July. That says to me that Black Widow, Shang Chi and The Eternals are all flops. Marvel’s hope for this year is Sony’s Spider-Man movie.

Yeah one of them who didn’t go to the Theaters is me. Why should I’ll go and see it there if I can watch it with Disney+ 45 days later ?
+ all of the new phase movies have this filler vibe to me. The one I will go and see immediately is Spider-Man. I didn’t watch the trailer and I’m too afraid of getting spoilered

Those movies are all among the 10 biggest movies of the year even without a China release.
If MCU is a flop then Dune is too.

I dont think Marvel is getting a huge cut of the Spider-Man box office. I know they were renegotiating around that with the recent re-up, but who knows what the outcome was.

25%

The new deal was signed late on Thursday night. Negotiations involved top players from both studios, including Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman, Feige and Walt Disney Studios co-chairs Alan Horn and Alan Bergman. In exchange for lending Feige’s producing prowess, Marvel and Disney will receive roughly 25% of the profits, according to insiders. Disney will retain its merchandising rights and will put up roughly a quarter of the financing. As part of the arrangement, Spider-Man will also appear in one future Marvel Studios film.

It's hard to judge for Dune, it released on HBO Max same time it release in US theater's. Within week the sequel was confirmed. I can only assumed it did well on HBO Max.
