Only one score over 50? Not great I'd say.

Who else can england turn to though? They've burned through so many openers already.

Alex Hales will probably be the one. I don't rate his technique for opening in Tests, but if you score runs domestically there's not much more you can do. Ballance may be a shout. He should come back into the team for the winter anyway.

Alex Hayles is probably the only suitable candidate for that opening spot, but he has disappointed at ODI level. However, Collingwood and Symonds were one-day specialists who turned into decent Test players over time. I think they can do same with Hayles given some time. He has potential.

I think they've been slowly moulding Hayles into the long term partner for Cook (who, lets be realistic, hasnt had a proper once since Strauss). He's been opening in the County Championship for a few games now, most recently scoring a hundred.

I can see Lyth disappearing off the national scene for a while but scoring crazy for Yorkshire and then getting calls for a recall soon enough.

Weather forecast has gotten worse for tomorrow, and now there's a severe weather warning for Monday. There might be an hours play or so tomorrow. This is ending up a draw.

Prospects for Lythe's future Test career?

If they have any sense? Right now at least he won't have much. He's had 7 tests and shown very little in the way of promise, he got that century against New Zealand but apart from that he's getting out in the same way every time, a walking wicket.

It says much when you're an opening batsman from the best county side in the land where you've made a bigger impact as a slip fielder..

It is not just that Lyth has either got out in the same way or to an indisciplined shot; he also hasn't looked like he fits in at all. There's nothing about him that makes you think this guy will make it.

Ballance played badly but you know he has it. Buttler too. But Lyth, it just isn't there.

Yep, Ballance and Buttler just look out of nick and need to fix mechanical issues - Lyth just looks out of his depth.

Rains about to arrive. They might get an hour later on if the drainage is good, but it's pretty much meant to rain until the back of four.

Ali wafts at far too much to open.

It's going to rain for 2 days?

Pretty much, there's a severe weather warning for London tomorrow and today the forecast is for rain from 12 til about 16:30 so if that's accurate then they might get on for a bit later (although that depends on the drainage)

Poor Moeen has played some crucial knocks this series but has had to bat in crisis/with the tail. He should be number 5 or 6 for sure. No higher, though.

Well, at least we saw off clarkey well. Congrats to england for the series win. Though at least we can say that we've never been whitewashed. ;)

He might get away with opening in the UAE, although people forget Pakistan have a pretty decent seam attack, but he's far far too fond of playing at the ball.

He might be able to get away with it due to the docile conditions for pace bowling but it seems more appropriate to bed a proper opener in before games in other conditions where Ali will be unsuited to opening.

I assume they are saying "Rooooooooooooooot." A bit like they used to for Paul Roos in the AFL, I thought they were booing him!

It would be absolutely awful if BT Sport won the rights to cricket. It is bad enough that it is not on free to air tv in some form, but to move to BT goddamn sport? Fuck the ecb if true. Unless, they factor in free to air elements into the deal... Sky at least do a fantastic job with their coverage, something BT have yet to do in any sports I've watched of theirs.

Their choice of commentators is utterly horrendous. Michael Owen is destined to go down as the worst commentator of all time. Their European football panel is probably the best thing they do to be honest.

Honestly though, I couldn't give a single crap about Sky. They spent years poaching all the best free-to-air sport. If it wasn't for government regulations they would've nabbed the World Cup, Euro's and Olympics too by now. The situation is of their making. Until now, they made buying major sports rights impossible for any other broadcaster by inflating prices to astronomical levels. Now they're being priced out of their bread and butter. Fuck those guys, it's their own fault.
Fun fact: I almost ended up working for Sky.

In fairness though, they fucking nail cricket coverage. And with the amount they invest into cricket it's only fair that they cover the ashes.

Yeah I dont like Sky and I think the lack of free to air cricket coverage is incredibly damaging but at least they do a damn good job of it. Besides their fellatio of Warne.
