The Vatican is replacing its controversial ambassador to the U.S., who arranged the meeting between Pope Francis and antigay Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis last fall.

Italian Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò will leave the position of apostolic nuncio, the equivalent of an ambassador, and will be replaced by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, a French-born clergyman who is currently the nuncio to Mexico, Catholic magazine America reports, citing Sandro Magister, a blogger who covers the Vatican.

The Vatican is not expected to confirm the news until the Obama administration has agreed to the new nuncio’s appointment, the magazine notes, but it adds that “reliable sources” expect an official announcement before Easter, which falls on March 27 this year. Because of his experience in Mexico, Pierre may well emphasize immigration issues, The Washington Post reports.

Viganò has had a different emphasis, being “often more outspoken in his antagonism to same-sex marriage than others in the church,” the Post reports. The Roman Catholic Church remains adamantly opposed to such unions, but Pope Francis has said clergy members needn’t discuss the issue constantly.

I remember how shocked I was when the initial reports came out saying she got a private meeting with him. Then the real story came out. Looks like the Pope may have been in the dark about the meeting the entire time.

Pope replaces ambassador to U.S. who set up Kim Davis meeting

On Tuesday, the Vatican announced that the day had come. Vigano, the diminutive diplomat who aroused ire by setting up a secret meeting in Washington between the Pope and Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who has become a conservative Christian heroine for refusing to sign same-sex marriage certificates, is out.

He wasn't fired, exactly. Bishops are required to submit their resignation to the pope when they turn 75, and Vigano reached that milestone in January. But many bishops are allowed to serve past that point at the pope's discretion. That's true of Vatican ambassadors, called apostolic nuncios, as well.

Officially, then, the Pope accepted Vigano's resignation, and replaced him with Archbishop Christophe Pierre, a seasoned diplomat who was previously the papal nuncio in Mexico, where Francis just finished a successful trip in February.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington took a diplomatic approach to Tuesday's announcement, welcoming Pierre's appointment with "joy" but also expressing an appreciation for Vigano's "dedicated efforts."

I thought the "meeting" didn't actually happen? or was blown up from a glancing encounter, so to speak?
