May 2016 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes June 7th

My opinion?

Clearing stock for an xb1 mini that will straight up replace the original.

Having said that, this is a fucking firesale deal. Meaning that sales are poor, so the only way to actually clear stock is to have this bonkers deal.

I mean, look at what you're getting for 320. This does not show me a company happy with their sales.

Or they are channel-stuffed and want to clear the deck for the season bundles.

Interesting timing to say the least.

I think it reinforces the idea that a slim is going to be announced at E3, probably same price, replacing the regular XB1.

Doubt that it'll pressure Sony into advancing their own price drop (which I was seeing at E3, while possibly introducing the $399 Neo 4k), but we'll see :)

Sony will probably drop to $299 right before PSVR launches. They don't need to drop it again so soon.

Hardware:

[XB1] 150K
[PS4] 190K
[WIU] 40K
[3DS] 65K

With respect to software:

DS3, Overwatch, Uncharted 4 & The Division in Top 5.

Ratchet, DOOM in 5-7 range.

Battleborn and Quantum Break, outside Top 10.

GTAV within Top 10 as usual ;-)

#shrug

It's possible, but in term of market saturation they know they are well overdue for a full $100 drop (compared to the launch price), and they probably don't see why they should let some price-based sales go to their competitor during the summer when kids/ students have so much free time.
Also, the PSVR launch will imo be a hardware event of its own, and a price drop on the main console would be lost in terms of marketing spotlight, when it deserves a focus of its own.

It just seems to me that E3 makes a lot of sense, but we shall see :)

And this talk of clearing Stock for Xbox mini is nonsense. As stated in the original rumour thread, the Xbox mini is for smaller games, not XBO titles. There is only so much you can shrink these machines without coming into serious thermal issues, even now 3 years later.
You don't think it's possible to deflate this coffin?

you know, I wouldn't mind a PS4 mini and PS4K option this year. If Sony are going to try iterative console, I say go all in. PS4 is the standard, PS4 mini is a "cut-corner" version, and PS4K is a premium. I would trade up to a PS4K and get a "mini" as the second unit in my house.

I dunno, I think it could work, whatever gets PS4 down to the $199 price-point is the best way for it to get close to PS2 numbers.

Edson making ridiculous posts again? Shocking.

When was the last time a MS sale ended when it was supposed to? Even the major price drops were still available a few days after their cutoff point.

And Scorpio is way too far off for clearing stock.

People are speculating they're clearing stock for the Slim in that Xbox price drop thread. Seems plausible, no?

Sure but it's more plausible that, just like Jan 2015 after the holiday sale, sells were tanking and they had to keep price down to even compete. Even at $299 they weren't exactly doing well and bringing it back up would just give more sells to PS4. So far they're down yoy while Sony is up yoy. Probably something they are discussing a lot at Microsoft.

No.

Because there is no slim.

There is an Xbox TV, a streaming stick and an Xbox one:2 releasing next year.

People got so caught up in the original thread, they didn't listen to the podcast properly.

Xbox One Slim <> Xbox Mini

I'm confident MS will show a Xbox One revision this E3... smaller with same power.

I mean we don't know that, but I'm not entirely convinced that the reason for the price drop is to clear stock for a Slim. I think it's probably just because the Xbox is doing poorly and this official price drop gives them more room to go down even further (as in $299 + free game and/or gift card).

Either way, we'll know in 2 weeks.

It would make no sense. There is no need for a revision if the base model is going to be supplanted next year.

The main customers for a revision are people upgrading their consoles. To put a slim on the market jeopardises these people upgrading to a Scorpio next year.

Also, it's also been heavily rumoured that one of the reasons for both these midcycle upgrades is that they cost Sony just as much as a slim would, removing any cost reduction a slim model would normally have. With Microsoft having a much more exotic architecture in comparison, I would only imagine the same would apply.

You can bookmark this post. There will not be an Xbox slim shown at E3. Only an apple TV like device.

Disagree. A slim would make sense, even alongside the scorpio.
Give people a cheaper option, make money on subscriptions, services and games.
Save space on shelves and transport.
Save money on parts used.
There will be a slim and E3 is a good moment to show it.
The TV box / USB stick idea is rubbish anyway.

Scorpion won't replace Xbox One.
Both will be sold with support to the same games.

Scorpio is not a new generation... is a stop gap like PS4k.

In both sides you will have a cheaper SKU ($200-299) and a power SKU ($400-499).

PS4 will receive a cheaper Slim version too.

Nobody said it was. But the primary customer for Scorpio is going to be people already invested in the XBO ecosystem. It's going to be a premium SKU so it's not going to be aimed at people who haven't jumped in this generation, or already own PS4s.

It would be foolish to give that crowd a new product and then say "actually this is the new hotness, right here"

There isn't going to be a PS4 slim either. Neo is your slim.

Your filtering this through the lens of a console gamer. Live subs and services are taken care of with opening Xbox to be part of windows 10.

The cheaper option will be the vanilla XBO in bundle after bundle because that's what's been working so far.

For a second there, I thought you were setting me up for a 'burial at sea' joke.
Since Edson's id joke I retired.

I don't get it. I gave good reasons from logistic and business standpoints and you are saying i am wearing gamer lenses.

If you say that pulling the plug on Xbox as a whole would be reasonable for MS... I'm in.
But if they want to keep the console business, a slim is just logical. Imagine we get a ps4 slim and xbox keeps it's size. That wouldn't be vanilla but godzilla.

You arent getting either, for reasons I've already mentioned above. But I'm no insider and we will find out for certain in 2 weeks.

As for the gamer thing, I'm just pointing out that everything Microsoft does now with Xbox cannot be see as a decision for Xbox alone but windows 10 as an ecosystem. That's what they are moving towards. The same streaming stick/micro console thing seem stupid from a gamer point of view, but we arent the market for those products.

Okay, finally got it. I see the focus on Win10, too, so I still cannot believe that there will be a Scorpio. An XboxOne small still sounds obvious (would you like a small avatar bet?)
So let's be excited and see what's happening at the E3 Windows10 conference.

I think the MS conference is going to be very interesting from that point of view.

In particular the words used by Spencer as "share our Story", which implies the evolution of a whole narative behind their choices, which would further imply some possible big changes finally revealed/ made clear.

Which is why I think that Scorpio will in a way be a big "break", being their first full on Win10 HTPC with Xbox brand, playing native PC Windows store games (and possibly no optical drive), "big" gpu power at $499+ (and VR capable). I imagine they would keep the XB1 as the "entry level" Xbox with Win10 UWAp console/ TV box.
If confirmed, the new Xbox tv box and stick would also make sense as an "ecosystem" that would -eventually- revolve around the Scorpio and/or any powerful multimedia capable Win10 PC.

But maybe I read too much into things ;)

It could be that Microsoft is trying to clear stock, but the stock isn't clearing out at a fast enough pace hence the pricecut and all these "too good to be true" deals.

Proposal:
Slim XboxOne model shown at E3 - I win
No Slim XboxOne model shown at E3 - You win
Price/punishment: 1 month of avatar occupation. No vore.
Deal?

P.S.: XboxOne model does mean hardware revision with comparable specs to vanilla. Not booth babes.

I wouldn't bet against a Xbox One Slim model, especially with 1TB bundles at $319 what implies fire sale to clean current stock.

Actually, when were most 1TB bundles cut to $369? That's what the original price is showing on the Xbox website.

It's too bad banned people have their avatars removed. I've been told mine could use a refresh and was just going to steal Edson's. Oh well.

EDIT: The extent of my photo editing skeelz. Thanks MS Paint!

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
It's like one of these horror stories of that guy who had a severe accident and gets a transplantation with body parts from an executed madman.
Take care, queso.

I don't know.
I mean...what could possibly go wrong?
