Another "One, Truth" comment...
I know I bring it back all the time but look at the 2016 ratchet score... It is beloved game.
But objectively it is a tryhard movie-tie in game with terrible story, forgettable music and just worst jokes ever.
People sure like being blinded by graphics.

no. I've not played it yet. I might pick it tomorrow

Think I hit a bug that is stopping my progression. Not that far in and on Corson V, when I follow the phantom after the night club he just gets to the bolt i can't unscrew and sits there. If I run away and comeback he's gone. I'm stuck. Am I missing something or is this a bug?
i thought I had a bug too… turns out you have to take out all the enemies in the area and then the screw unlocks (At least for me).

It is far from terrible, forgettable and worst.

In fact it is highly entertaining.

Nothing against an opinion or fair critisicm but mister O OneTruth is a troll, and nothing else.

Played through the first few levels…

Definitely that WOW factor and feeling that you’re playing a Pixar movie. The game is just full of so much detail it’s overwhelming how much is happening on the screen.

Gameplay is like other R&C games.. could use more platform aspects … but that’s all a very minor nitpick. I may ramp up the challenge level as well as it seems to be fairly easy on progression but I only have it set to the middle difficulty level.

Overall - first hour of gameplay was fantastic… looking forward to some extended play time this weekend.

This thread is making the wait painful, but I did pick up the game for 55 so I can wait. Plus I’m loving returnal right now. I hope it arrives tomorrow, but realistically I think it will be Monday :(
Well I paid full price… and this is probably the *first* game I’ve seen this generation actually worth the $70 asking price.

I plan to finish it and then trade it for Returnal on discount.

yeah I expect to be able to clock it within a week and then I should hopefully get back what I paid for it in trade. Can’t wait to play it, I’ve loved every ratchet and clank.

Actually it may be an issue with the Playstation Profile. This is mine:

Zn5usLr.jpg

There are no mentions of PS5 games. I believe that an apology to Riky Riky is due. He actually may very well have a PS5 and be playing R&C.

My profile doesn't show any of my PS5 games either. For games like Sackboy and Miles it shows the PS4 version, of which I have like two trophies each because I just tried them out while waiting on my PS5.

Furthermore it only shows one of my platinumed games (I only Plat'd two, inFAMOUS: Second Son and The Last Camp Fire).

Overall it's missing about half of the games I have trophies for. I guess the site just doesn't track some.

I've been bouncing between Fidelity and Performance RT mode and yeah, I just can't give up the insane level of detail in Fidelity mode. I am 100% on the other side of the Digital Foundry folks who said Performance RT was more than enough for this game. 60FPS is great and all, but the aliasing for Performance RT just makes things look to vaseline like. . .Fidelity has the sharpness that I think this game demands. Everything just pops.

. . .I've also never played a F&C game before and am surprised at how fun the combat is. Kind of reminds me of RETURNAL - like a bullet hell game for everyone. Cranked the game up to the second highest difficulty though so perhaps it doesn't feel like that at lower levels (have died though most of those are to experimentation with the platforming).

Played a bit more tonight it’s unbelievable the quality in this game is insane.

Classic issue of RT Performance mode Vs Quality mode and playing more on Quality. Whilst the assets and resolution are fine there is something about the depth of the lighting that’s just a little off for me and makes it look less detailed and more washed out, I’m not sure if it’s the HDR or what but somethings up with the lighting I know there is a difference as stated in the settings, perhaps raytraced shadows or maybe ambient lighting effects.

it’s much more impressive in Quality mode but very smooth in RT Performance. Just don’t want to miss out on those effects…sigh

How can this game be so superior to the PS4 gameplay in every damn way. Every shortcoming that made me feel bored In the PS4 game is addressed in this game. It has done pretty much everything I needed to make me fall in love.

I’m about 6 hours in and wow am I loving it. A smile on my face the whole damn time. I don’t care when people say ‘graphics don’t matter its all about gameplay’ it’s just not true. Graphics enhance the experience so damn much and I am constantly in awe while playing this. It is so beautiful and so much fun at the same time and all the battle arenas are so well designed. The weapons are just so much better than R&C PS4. Back on the PS4 they felt gimmicky where as boy do some of these new weapons feel like they’ve got some punch to the point I’m not sure exactly which weapons I want to use they’re all so cool.

Ive been playing in performance RT and I can’t say I’m disappointed. Of course I would love 60fps at full 4K but I can tell the difference it’s not enough to lose those extra frame smoothness. I can truly see the res bump when I go into photo mode. It feels like the consoles just needed a tiny bit more horses or perhaps second Gen AMD raytracing but even so I’m very pleased and the higher temporal resolution is just impossible to pass up.

Insomniac are fast becoming one of the top devs in the world. To crank these high quality games out so fast is magic, and they even say no crunch. They’re clearly onto something good and I hope they can keep them coming.

Funny I just posted a similar thing below you but completely agree. This seems to be one of those games that needs to be played in 30FPS and is actually VERY smooth for it.

Whats the general consensus mode to play it on?

Fidelity looks great but its capped at 30fps so it plays slightly worse than the other modes

Performance RT pretty much feels like Performance mode but looks blurrier

Performance Mode looks crisp resolution wise and feels smooth

Ppl are claiming Performance RT is the way to go but honesty it looks less crisp than Performance mode and I don't really notice any rey tracing

so far regular performance mode looks and plays the best for me

They say nothing about performamce RT mode being blurrier then performance mode

well it is to me bro

the resolution looks lower in Performance RT mode than it does in regular Performance when played on a 4k tv

anyone else reading this can check for themselves to verify

About ten hours in now. On to the final act.

Will definitely start over to level up all weapons and get the platinum.

Great fun. The spider hacking levels are awesome. Only downside is Clank’s puzzle levels which suck absolute balls.

Some of this might sound harsh but some genuine critique below.

Overall I’m really enjoying the game. The gameplay is simple but very polished. Snappy controls and really fun and flashy combat with a nice variety of weapons. Not sure how long I’ve played but maybe 4 hours with 4 planets down with some exploring.

Performance has been virtually perfect and I’ve only noticed the odd split second stutter.

Had a few minor bugs like the first boss stopping at 45% and getting stuck in geometry but all fixed with a quick restart. Speaking of quick the load times are virtually instant which is nice.

The city level has to be one of the best looking levels in any game ever and is a great start.

I really disliked the swamp level as there are invisible walls everywhere and it’s not clear where you are supposed to explore as there is stuff not on the map that you can easily get to but then get stuck without a snail thing. It also looks poor compared to the city.

The arena seems really cool but there don’t seem to be a lot of challenges but it only let me unlock the first set so silver and gold might have more about them.

Not sure if it was a bug as I didn’t restart or if it’s a tough level to render and it’s closer to 1080p but the image quality in performance RT mode on the 4th planet was much lower with noticeable jaggies and lots of shimmering in motion on fur and stuff.

I don’t love the haptics as there is too much going on IMO so it becomes messy but they are good when something big is happening like the baseline in the club. I might try the alternative haptics and see if they are more my style. I’m not normally a fan of the triggers but they work really well in this for alt fire.

The rifts have felt like a gimmick so far. The yellow ones don’t add much to combat and are basically a grappling hook and the only purple ones I’ve found outside of cutscenes have been the optional pockets that would definitely work on a hdd with a small load - albeit it wouldn’t look as cool. I have seen the prerelease stuff where the whole world changes in a split second so maybe rifts are a much bigger part of the other levels.

Same struggles here. I've settled with RT Performance, though.

I got the game earlier this week but decided to wait for the day 1 patch for the fidelity mode. The game... I mean, my better half thought I was watching something on Disney+ Proof that this thing is a spectacle in terms of visual fidelity.

We need the PS OT.

I'm not sure where it went but my PS5 has been feasting. Returnal, Demon Souls, Miles Morales, Sackboy, and Now Ratchet... I got Res village and I just bought the FF Remake which should arrive next week.

I've been gaming for a while and can't remember a launch year being THIS good, ever. Someone make or bump the PS OT asap. I'm beyond impressed.

Also Sifu and Kena are looking sublime.

Fully agree. This morning I played some R&C (2016) before starting R&C: Rift Apart. The leap between the two games is amazing.

R&C: Rift Apart is a true next gen game on all levels:
1) Gameplay - Most of it is standard R&C fare, but the pocket zones and portals bring a new gameplay mechanic that can't be done on any last-gen platform. I love seeing gameplay innovation, even more than improved graphics/sound.
2) Graphics - 4K raytraced graphics (optional 60 fps 1440p raytraced) with a world density that is amazing. The high quality of the models, materials and textures shows in every nook and cranny. Play on the best 4K HDR display you can. Nothing else you have seen will compare.
3) Sound - Play the game with headphones and the 3D sound will blow you away.
4) Control - DualSense haptics are just fabulous and really adds to the immersion of every bit of gameplay activity.

My prediction: No game in 2021 will top R&C: Rift Apart in next-gen gameplay, graphics, sound and control. Not from Sony or any other publisher.

I even suspect that R&C: Rift Apart won't get topped till late 2022, give how many cross-gen games are still coming from Sony and other publishers. No cross-gen game is going to touch R&C:Rift Apart.
Yeah I finished ratchet ps4 last month, just the gameplay alone is leaps ahead. Love it. Level design is crazy

Some gripes I have so far:
  • Custom control layout sux, Remapping say L1 and R1 will also remap menu navigation making it super awkward, and button prompts when riding the snail still displays R1 hard coded but is no longer the true boost button since it was remapped, weirdly enough, the slow down when prompting you to press R1 only goes away when pressing R1 but again you still need to hold the true reassigned button to boost. This is quite the screw up here, I did set up a Custom layout that I really liked until I found this problem. I'm so disappointed, Returnal did an amazing job with this however, talk about tripping in front of the goal line.
  • You can't assign shortcuts to weapons on diagonals, so you have max 4 weapon shortcuts, it could have been 8. This is a missed opportunity, but I'll survive.
  • Photo mode, L2 and R2 has no analogue input, so you can't move around and admire the environment as smoothly as in some other games with better camera controls. This is nitpicking but could have been improved upon form Spiderman.
  • You can't turn off the camera reset/follow, I love games that let my camera stay in place, now I need to constantly readjust the camera manually to keep it in an elevated place or view direction when moving about.

Some other musings:
  • Game looks great in screen shots, but it almost feels like a lie, the game does not feel good to play at 30fps, the real game to me at least is the 60fps RT mode. So while the games design and world looks great, the 30fps mode images posted on social media is like a marketing gimmick, that doesn't represent the true experience you get in the end, unless you don't minde slide shows. So as I sit pretty close to my 75" TV, the 1440p resolution is quite noticeable low compared to Fidelity mode and I really whish I could eat and keep the cake here, like how I can with my RTX 3090 in many games, there I can keep all the bells and whistles on at 4K60fps, LOL. Yeah I know, it's not a fair comparison but I kind of whish they designed the game for 4K60fps from the start, they way Demons Souls were, that game looks soooo good it's not even funny. To me it feels like the PS5 was launched just a tad too early as AMD raytracing HW wasn't strong enough and it's the main culprit why games have to drop down to 1440p to maintain 60fps with RT on. With all that said, I'm still glad the game is even offering the option and hope all PS5 games keep these 60fps options up going forward. I just whish.... cake...

EDIT: OMG I've been playing the game at 1080p in RT mode due to the new PS5 120hz setting. My display can't do 4K 120hz but it can do 1080p 120hz so PS5 decided to out put the game at that resolution, no wonders I thought it looked so low res. So head up folks, if your display doesn't support 4K 120hz turn of PS5 120h Automatic setting.

Rift Apart is visually stunning! I’m taking my time so far and really soaking it all in. I tried fidelity mode first and while it looked incredible, I couldn’t go back to it after trying performance RT and feeling how smooth the gameplay was.

I just completed Nefarious City, and the city feels lively. Much more so than any previous Ratchet title. The audio is incredible as you’re approaching the club. The music in this game is really phenomenal. Dualsense is well implemented and the gameplay is better than ever. The dash on the circle button feels very natural coming from Returnal especially.

The rift portals are actually more functional during combat than I thought they’d be, and Insomniac have woven them into the levels for finding secret gold bolts and raritanium, so I thought that was cool.

Loading is pretty much instant. The story has me more engaged than previous entries. I could go on but I’m really impressed so far.

I have the difficulty cranked up to max and the gunfights are actually offering a fair bit of challenge too!
