Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart |OT| Next-gen just got riveting....

I'm sorry, slideshows? Have you played the game?
Y E S !
If you were wondering how it's spelled.

I've played a lot of fighting games and Quake through out the years, I loath slide show fps, it's almost unbearable. But his gen so far has been great with all the 60fps options, so I remain hopeful.

I’m gonna say this is a game that’s meant to be played in 30fps with everything going on - I’m sure if the majority tried it for an hour they’d easily get used to it. It’s not a slideshow unless you felt like last of us 2 was a slideshow as well - if so I can’t help

Jesus. Some of this optional content is crazy. Third Planet encounter on second highest difficulty. . .good lord.

. . .there was also a ton of shit popping off on the screen and didn't slowdown once (well that was perceptible).

I honestly think Performance RT is the best mode to go for, they're pretty close to each other and 60fps is much cleaner in motion. 30fps gives the Pixar movie vibes though. Of course, you're not an idiot if you choose one or another, just pick what suits you.

Also for Pulse 3D owners, go to the menu and change the setup from "headphones" to "Pulse 3D". How different? Not sure, didn't investigate but they suggest so. Might compare later and report.

Some gripes I have so far:
  • Custom control layout sux, Remapping say L1 and R1 will also remap menu navigation making it super awkward, and button prompts when riding the snail still displays R1 hard coded but is no longer the true boost button since it was remapped, weirdly enough, the slow down when prompting you to press R1 only goes away when pressing R1 but again you still need to hold the true reassigned button to boost. This is quite the screw up here, I did set up a Custom layout that I really liked until I found this problem. I'm so disappointed, Returnal did an amazing job with this however, talk about tripping in front of the goal line.
  • You can't assign shortcuts to weapons on diagonals, so you have max 4 weapon shortcuts, it could have been 8. This is a missed opportunity, but I'll survive.
  • Photo mode, L2 and R2 has no analogue input, so you can't move around and admire the environment as smoothly as in some other games with better camera controls. This is nitpicking but could have been improved upon form Spiderman.
  • You can't turn off the camera reset/follow, I love games that let my camera stay in place, now I need to constantly readjust the camera manually to keep it in an elevated place or view direction when moving about.

Some other musings:
  • Game looks great in screen shots, but it almost feels like a lie, the game does not feel good to play at 30fps, the real game to me at least is the 60fps RT mode. So while the games design and world looks great, the 30fps mode images posted on social media is like a marketing gimmick, that doesn't represent the true experience you get in the end, unless you don't minde slide shows. So as I sit pretty close to my 75" TV, the 1440p resolution is quite noticeable low compared to Fidelity mode and I really whish I could eat and keep the cake here, like how I can with my RTX 3090 in many games, there I can keep all the bells and whistles on at 4K60fps, LOL. Yeah I know, it's not a fair comparison but I kind of whish they designed the game for 4K60fps from the start, they way Demons Souls were, that game looks soooo good it's not even funny. To me it feels like the PS5 was launched just a tad too early as AMD raytracing HW wasn't strong enough and it's the main culprit why games have to drop down to 1440p to maintain 60fps with RT on. With all that said, I'm still glad the game is even offering the option and hope all PS5 games keep these 60fps options up going forward. I just whish.... cake...
Slideshow? A perfect 30fps a slideshow!? Oh my!

Honestly the bigger the TV and closer you are to it the worse low FPS can get. Also if it's OLED, especially LG, it's even worse and more stuttery. LCD's tend to handle it much better, plasmas being the best along with CRT.

I legit don't see it. The antialiasing alone introduces a pretty striking difference in visual quality. PRT is not ugly in the slightest, but - of course - Fidelity just has way more detail going for it; combined with all the visual whizzbangs and raytracing in terms of quality it can't be beat.

I have a 65 inch tv and nope no slideshow on my end lol

Good thing that we have the choice, and this new Performance RT is much better than Spiderman MM PRT mode imho, which was already impressive! If this is the tip of the iceberg as Insomniac dev says, we should expect wonders from both RT and 60fps on PS5 exclusives that will look much better than most native 4K in 3rd party games.

Yeah! Exactly, it's probably a testing ground right now , i can't even imagine what they will be able to do with Spider-man 2 if it's only on ps5(doubt it), but this is just the beggining man.

I think it'll be PS5-only. HFW, GT7, and GOW:R seem like the last crossgen games to me. That $70 and being PS5-only will spike sales a lot, I think, with better profit margins. Most gamers are casuals who play fortnite/fifa/cod, and most new comers to PS5 are usually the hardcores who pay for those games.

We'll see! Cause 57376373 billion people have a ps4 soo , i'm sure 80% of them would buy it on ps4 , they need more Ps5's out in public to have a huge franchise like Spider-man exclusively for ps5 !

It's a top of the line Sony LCD, but it uses Puls Width Modulation (like most modern LCD) for it LED array and it makes the backlight flicker at a constant 720z regardless of content fps. This some how make edges in 30fps flicker quite distractingly while 60fps is perfectly calm. Though on my older Sony that used constantly turned on LEDs (still with dimming) is was much calmer in 30fps games. Yet I would never opt to play 30fps when there is 60fps, no matter the down grade.

Spider-man 2 will probably be around 2023, which by then you should expect around 40-50M PS5 consoles or more if 6nm node compensation boosts current plans. It's a very healthy number especially that all 3rd party games still look like garbage so far.

And the downgrade is extremely small here, unlike other games.

Regarding 30fps - me and a buddy of mine have been meaning to try Dying Light. Not because we'd be so into zombies, or the whole parkour thing. Just that we both know you can dropkick zombies in the game, and that's so stupid it sounds like it could be really fun together. As it is currently on sale on PSN, we decided why not.

I'm assuming (playing on a PS5) I get as close to the target frame rate as possible, that being 30fps, and it feels terrible. I had to turn down the right stick sensitivity, which will give me an disadvantage, but I just couldn't take it otherwise. Panning the camera is still very choppy despite that. Production values and budget aside, there are four words that separate that game and this running at 30fps: "Per-Object Motion Blur" (and a good implementation, naturally). It really does make that much of a difference, whether you agree with it being used or not.

Now that 60fps + RT is an option, sure I'll go for it. But something like Spider-Man or the previous R&C on a PS4/Pro (why not compare to other Insomniac titles given the thread), they were fine. I didn't feel I had to adjust the settings because the screen refreshing gave me a headache. So yeah, all hail motion blur, when done right.

but how is performance RT better when Performance mode has higher resolution and frames?

I'm all for object motion blur but I will always turn of camera motion blur.

I think Performance mode looks pretty bland without RT and shouldn't have been included in both this game and Spiderman MM/Remastered. That's my opinion, though. IQ > Resolution.
it looks pretty much identical minus some detailed puddles/reflection but with increased resolution and an overall sharper image quality

Performance RT is an overall fuzzier/softer image.

OMG I've been playing the game at 1080p in RT mode due to the new PS5 120hz setting. My display can't do 4K 120hz but it can do 1080p 120hz so PS5 decided to out put the game at that resolution, no wonders i thought it looked so low res. So head up folks, if your display doesn't support 4K 120hz turn of PS5 120h Automatic setting.

It still runs at 60 though.

Wow what a game, best looking next gen game out right now, effects on this are crazy good, hdr and hepatic feedback are great, adaptive triggers, is hit and miss, on some guns, its great, others not so.

Found my best mode, its 60fps none rt mode, 30fps is fine, but 60fps just gives that extra kick for the gameplay, 60fps none rt is so sharp and clean,

Best settings to use to get a clean and sharp image,
Performance mode
Turn off motion blur
Turn off film grain
Turn off chromatic aberration

Use this guide to set up hdr

It does, but it looked very low res and blurry at 1080p LOL. Now that I've turned off the 120zh Automatic output setting it looks quite sharp in fact and is more than to my liking. Me previous post about the resolution is moot and I've edited it as well.

So I spent all day F5'ing Bestbuy and various retailers in hopes that because Ratchet released there'd be a small restock of PS5's today, alas, there was not. So to everyone who already has a PS5 and is enjoying this great game, fuck you, and also enjoy your time and have a great night.

I think RT on this game is revelatory, I want it on every game. The reflections are used everywhere. So many metal and glass surfaces of various textures that bounce light differently, it just makes the game look noticably better. Many times in this game, I've stared at a curved glass surface seeing how the reflection curves.

It's very cool and something you don't get in last gen games.

It’s just a gimmick like Gaf kept repeating 🤣

30 fps is fine. I'm having a blast. Visually the game is on another league compared to other games we have seen. So much detail.

And to think it's a native 4k game. They have pretty much half of the gpu power still available if they target 1440p 30 fps like ue5 games would. Spiderman 2 is going to look like that cg tv spot they made for miles.

30 fps is awsome , no problem there, it's good to have the choice , but i don't think ill be able play the game normaly , every time i pause it i go into photo mode , soo Beautiful
i'm at the rooftop right now and i just can't stop taking pictures , i feel like a kid 1st time seing Mario 64 .

I know I bring it back all the time but look at the 2016 ratchet score... It is beloved game.
But objectively it is a tryhard movie-tie in game with terrible story, forgettable music and just worst jokes ever.
People sure like being blinded by graphics.

no. I've not played it yet. I might pick it tomorrow
You could have gotten it for free a couple of months ago.

Well i tried all the graphic modes and performance is the right one for me.

30 fps mode is a slideshow after trying 60 fps and i just don't give a damn about more accurate reflections, and perf RT is not as stable with the framerate and the resolution is not as sharp.

I'm gonna switch mode another couple of times to experiment with different areas, but i think i'm done with my choice, framerate and resolution over rtx and slightly better lights and npc density.

The game is the usual good old ratchet with better graphic and some improvements like the dodge or the grappling hook, hardly something new in the action genre tbh, also a bit on the easy side even on max difficulty mode, why even bother with 5 difficulty levels when even the last one is still easier than some tps on normal...but i'm just like 2 hours in, maybe going forward things are gonna change.

The portals thing is neat but it feels like a glorified gimmick after a while, nothing more, nothing less.

Playing with the tv speakers was pretty shitty, headphones are very much needed with this game.

Even after playing the game on my oled, i think that the horizon FW gameplay looked better overall but maybe a bit worse when it come to characters during the cutscenes, but i guess different artstyle and shit, i just vastly prefer realistic over pixar style.

Ofcourse but people fool themselves, checking pixel counters on DF and be disappointed by something that actually looks really good. The most hilarious example was Tony Hawk looking like shit on PS5 because 1080p 120hz... only to find out the 1080p was a typo and they've been playing it at 1440p all along. This to me shows that people can hardly spot differences without the help of those over analyzing DF freaks at 300x zoom. Yet their opinion is formed because of it, which is unfortunate.

Try to enjoy the game for what it is. Realize you're not gaming on a rig worth a few grand.

As for this game or any other game. Always go performance and if the RT make it look better and the fps doesn't take a hit, pick that. You have less pixels on screen, but you have twice the movement. You're playing.

Ignore what I said earlier about the swamp level. You get something on that level when you come back that really helps with exploration so don't go crazy finding stuff first time round is my advice.

Many “Whelps”! Handle It!
As I approach the end I see why this didn't get perfect scores. To start, these Clank puzzle parts are jarring to the pacing, boring as shit, and completely unnecessary. Insomniac keeps adding these puzzles to their games and they do nothing but make them worse. Please stop. Let us skip them at least.

Edit: just jump off a ledge several times and you can skip them. If a portion of a game is so shitty that it can be skipped after numerous failures, why include it in the first place? Insomniac really needs to cut this shit out. Just don't. Don't.
