Horizon Forbidden West - Digital Foundry Tech Review - A PS5 Graphics Masterclass

People who were disappointed that GOW and HFW are not full next gen ( now current gen) game, after seeing this, how much you have changed your opinion?

Personally I never cared that much and most probably full current gen game will not look that better at this time anyway due to less production time. Maybe by 2024 or 2025 we will have games that will push Series X and PS5 to its full potential.

Makes me wish it were next gen even more so we could see how far they could go

Man this vfx guy are never happy 😂
I think he was really impressed with biomutant 😆. But with forbidden west he’s all

Oh don't get me wrong I was simply making a pun based on your username, it was in no way a real attack toward you, I thought the Edit made that pretty clear.
And honestly some people have posted far worse opinion than yours here you have all the rights to think it doesn't look that great, I would disagree of course but at least you have the maturity to post your opinion as what it is , an opinion. Some people here seem to think that their opinion is an universal truth no matter how many times they were proven wrong.

Don't worry, I wasn't mad. I always end my defenses of this stuff with a parody of The Dude from Big Lebowski lol.

I'm still getting Horizon 2: Horizon Harder because I enjoyed the first game's gameplay a lot, I just wished the story wasn't so forgettable and boring. That said, I was already a bit disappointed it was coming to PS4 and when I saw the pop ins, I was really sighing because one of the best things about Horizon 1 was the amazing graphical details outside of the character models (I thought they looked like plastic dolls without the shine).

I came into this thread expecting a VFXVeteran vs SonyBoys battle, and I haven't been disappointed :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It's still a very nice looking game through, if if it isn't a "next-gen" technical showcase. As always, it's the art direction that is most important. It'll be interesting to see what the PC version looks like next year.
See you in Gran Turismo 7 and God of War: Ragnarok threads next. 😂

The clipping is really distracting when everything else looks so good imo.

The hair is clipping through the bow almost 100% of the time which I guess is probably too hard to fix in real-time but her arm clips through the quiver every step she takes - surely just move the quiver if you know her arm is going to be there?

Some (most) people won't notice or care I guess but clipping is a real bugbear of mine to the extent that I avoid outfits that clip into the character (so I normally have about 10% of outfits to choose from in a Ubisoft game).

There should be a bald head accessibility option like there is for color blindness etc.

Interesting, a french reviewer I saw yesterday also has gone with quality, personally thinking about playing Ng with one mode then Ng+ with another one.
One aspect that is not mentioned but was mentioned by a 3D developer at Resetera is that the input lag at 30 FPS is ridiculously low - that helps a lot in making it a great mode. He (?) was baffled by how low it is and wondered how GG technically achieved this.

I think that even more than showing how great the game looks, these videos (gifs webm?) also show how awful youtube compression is.
I think it got worse in the recent months, videos from youtubers who know how to encode properly show more artefacts than they did (going from memory).

About that game, it looks great, but I miss water that is as interactive as it was in many PS2 games, it would deform and create actual waves when you walk in it. I think God of War did this... obviously this looks better overall, but I'm still waiting for truly ground breaking water bodies.

Oh I don't think I could get that reference as I only watched it in french.

Exactly what are you bragging about in this picture. If you zoom it up to it's original size in 4k, you can see the following:

* Low res shadow maps cast from the rocks
* Low poly rocks themselves
* A very aggressive texture filtering that removes all high frequency details of the sand relatively quickly (the falloff is extremely rapid) and the rock in the background looks standard fair. It's not tessellated and the texture on the rock doesn't have high frequency micro details blended into the macro normal texture.

The only thing I see implemented well is the fresnel affect on the water and the water shading itself where it goes from transparent to murky.

Here is your favorite reviewer reviewing the PC version of HZD (early version)

He mentions how these enhancements to the PC will be migrated to the PS5 for FW. He's correct.

Here is where he mentions how a native 4k makes the rendering quality sharper (i.e. just like the PS5's native 4k version of HFW):

"Textures are better, filtering is better, objects are finer, and the hair and character detail and the shadow maps are all improved".

I don't want to take this further. You are going to believe what you want to believe which is the MO every single time an exclusive PS5 game comes out. You ignore the reality and try to push screenshots down people's throats assuming that people will suddenly believe the rendering is doing something it is not. It's the same story as R&C. So I'm out of this thread..catch you on the next exclusive thread.

I dunno, you're looking at a small patch of an open world on relatively cheap hardware and you're peering at minute flaws that only you and those like you might see, and judging a game's graphics on it?

Show us your pristine fucking work lol, or is it on digital Foundry getting endless praise?

Also do us a favour and apply to a AAA company and let us know when they make you head of VFX.

Being a critic is fucking easy, picking holes, it's also flaccid and negative. Vetted bullshit.

Cannot stand clipping, one of the things that draws me out of a game as I always notice it, particularly when it is like weapons clipping through armor. I imagine hair is a difficult one to address from a compute perspective.

Well Destiny 30fps is the same I believe... the logic and input commands runs at 16ms (that is the standard for 60fps).
They explained in the past... you have to put gaming logic and render graphics code in different loops so your game logic is not tied to how many frames your running the render.

The pop-in actually does bother me a little. It "snaps" very obviously, they don't seem to be doing any smooth LOD transitions.

Hell no! Just have a flexible taste in games/colors.
Ok, I had to chuckle at this one.
Considering the ridiculous, probably too many amount of games in my personal collection I would say I have pretty flexible taste.

I just don’t like Horizon. And I said “I don’t like character design, and environments and color” Not “I don’t like the color.”

I generally don’t think the design of either horizon game is good, no more no less. Also, I hope the industry moves on from everything having to be open world. I would like Guerilla to try their hand at killzone again but more like killzone 2.

Sosokrates

Report me if I continue to console war
I think only God of War 2 has a chance of toppling this visually, but for sheer graphical bravura, GG have always been slightly ahead of anyone else in the console space so I think it'll fall just short.
At this point its really a preference because technology wise FW is not doing anything superior to other games.
I mean metro exodus has a realtime global illumination system, FW still uses 12 pre calculated gi implementations.

Can’t Git Gud
I started up some horizon1 on ps5. I really hope 2nd game is less annoying and have more qol changes :p
But it still looks good !

I like how she starts to wade through the water as it gets deeper. Gotta love the developers for adding these small little details. Its these things that add more immersion and believability to the game world.
The same way small details in The Last Of Us 2 like blood soaked bandages, clothing etc add more to the game.

Love it.

Go to your library and download it.

There used to be a point when preloads were automatic on PS4, but for me that hasn't worked in ages. So you have to start it manually.
Got it. I assume I can’t get the ps5 upgrade till it goes live in a few days?

I genuinely feel sorry for the people nitpicking this game.

What a joyless existence.
Why can’t we criticize the game? The first had plenty of major problems. This looks to continue the trend. I’ll find out once it releases on pc.

I... dunno? If you bought the PS4 version then I guess not. I'm assuming the PS5 version will be a completely different package altogether (as the store separates downloads for PS4 and PS5), so you may end up downloading the whole thing again.

Personally, I bit the bullet and preordered digitally on PS5, even if the price is slightly higher. Also forgot that I had promised to take my daughter to see her granny for the weekend, but before that - little over two days before this unlocks in my time zone, and I'll play the fuck out of it before I have to take a break (back to it on Sunday evening).

I guess that there are enough improvements to the PS5 version to where it's pretty much current gen maxed out or else there'd be a 1440p 60fps mode with better antialiasing. Maybe they will squeeze out more performance by the end of the gen, but for now this seems to be it.
