From what i have seen and heard, Elden Ring can sleep peacefully. Still surprised Ragnarok managed to hit 94 though.
They’re totally opposite games. Of course Elden Ring is going to win the most number of awards but I get how they can be head and shoulders for some people. ER is all about freedom, creating your own adventure and narrative, discovering whole subterranean worlds by total chance while Ragnarok is a meticulously curated linear experience - the ultimate AAA videogame rollercoaster created with all the money you can get. Good year, my friends.

That's the best summarization of the differences I've seen and it is right on. Dead on. They are different games with different design goals. Both great in their own way.

I'm sure both will have a nice trophy shelf of awards come January. Folks need to remember: there isn't just one GOTY given out every year. There are hundreds.

Of course. But still, i can compare what they bring to the table in the context of this year, even knowing my own bias and taste. If not, what's even the point of a game of the year ? You could say exactly the same thing for God of War and another random game.

When you say meticulously curated you're talking about production i guess. Yes the game smells money, that's also why it's stuck in certain design loops that we're starting to know well.

That brings its own strengths because SSM know how to use it. Environments are littered with great puzzles big and small that require you to think your way through the level. Followed by a more linear stretch that amps up the narrative and/or boss fights. Elden Ring is essentially hop on horse and go to thing that looks interesting, then fight boss.

Both are peak at their style

Got a bit further in GOWR (23hrs) and i just have to say this. GOWR is the pinnacle of gaming. I was not expecting THIS. The story, gameplay, gfx, audio, level design, art, character development... everything in this game is top tier. How the hell is SSM this much better than every one else not named Naughty Dog!?! This game deserves game of the year and is honestly the best game i have ever played. Its soooo much better than GOW2018 in every way and that was a GOTG. There is zero fluff, absolutely zero. The side content is better than almost every games main story..If you haven't played or are not planning to, just play this game you will not regret it.

I’m about 15 hours in. Solid 8.5 for me so far. I think it’s a great story. The game play becomes a bit repative. There’s not much freedom in how you play and the amount of puzzles is too much. Also why tf do they push me not to explore. I see a puzzle and circular arena and I’m like ugh. I wish the fights could be implemented more naturally into the environment too. So much is blocked off. The great things about it are the characters. From soft just don’t have this level of quality charscters in the same quantity. You need a masters in literature to understand fromsofts charscters. But elden rings gameplay is just much more rewarding. This is better than the first game objectively. Better character, combat world. But elden ring just revolutionary. This is a great game in the established convention.

Do yourself a favor and play the game. Elden ring was awesome before GOWR and will be awesome after GOWR. That does not take away what a masterpiece GOWR is. It deserves every bit of the high praise its getting.

Maybe 10+ hours into Ragnarok and Elden Ring still takes my GOTY, by some margin.

Still quite early in the game as I'm doing the story and side quests and could very well change. Still, loving the game though.

You know your game slaps fucking hard when the menu theme is GOAT tier;

And that intro. I’ve come over less.

There’s only one GOTY. And I don’t care what Timmy Tinycock from IGN thinks.

I like how they improved a good deal on the story side of things, but managed to retain that mysterious and eerie feeling.

I mean I lost the last avatar bet by betting for God of War having a delay, so this time I'm going to bet against it (and having finished it) quite frankly Elden Ring is a much better game, so...

Elden Ring locked in.

I'm a few hours into god of war...and elden ring has to have this in the bag. I adored 2018 but this is just....Good. not amazing...no where near the hype or where the reviews have placed it.

I'm actually kind of not interested to play ragnarok as much as I thought..elden ring I couldn't put down.

1-MC scores mean shit
2-Geoff doesn't vote. Also, Bloodborne and DS 3 didn't win shit
3-You mean similar to GOTY 2018? How is that a bad thing?
I loved Elden and love From but it has performance issues. To me that's important too. How polish does a game comes out. Sure Elden is open world i know that. From games almost all of them have performance issues except Sekiro? For that alone my goty will be gow because of polish and top notch everything is

It has to be Elden Ring. There is really no competition.

Both Horizon and GoW are more-of-the-same sequels. They are good, and in case of GoW - really good, but they didn't blow the roof off the house like ER did.
Sony is milking the cows with sequels to PS4 gambles that paid off massively. These games look expensive and play smooth.
However, neither of them recaptures the magic of the original. They are too safe for that.

ER took Dark Souls finally to mainstream, took massive risks and exceeded already inflated expectations.
It made other games feel bland in comparison, especially Horizon and other Ubi-open worlds.

I expect Horizon, GoW to get a few GotY awards here and there.
But if critics still do their work properly - ER should own this year.

Potential spoiler for those playing Ragnarok.

I opened up a full playthrough on YouTube and started clicking around to see what the game looks like. I'm sorry but really? This is what people are so hyped about? lol. The video is cued up to a section.

I hate to be a hater, I truly do but what is so special about this? I've been clicking around the video and I just see clips of the characters running on a linear path occasionally doing scripted Uncharted style platforming and like others have mentioned, side characters talking and clueing you in to puzzle solutions. It looks like Horizon: Zero Dawn, not sure what came first, that or GOW 2018. Horizon: ZD is fun but felt like a tech demo, just so lifeless.

It is what it is, I only talk shit cause we're betting on avatars.

There is a big difference between watching the game and actually playing it, I love FROM games but you will be super bored watching someone else playing that game. The only type of game I like watching is fighting games and only in pro tournaments.

This ugly, unimpressive, PS3 looking, trash-tier combat having, zero hit reaction ass game is supposed to be better?

Worst combat of the year? Definitely in the running.

Also Mod of War Mod of War we gonna have 2 avatar bet threads? Can we just merge mine and this one?

It's not supposed to, it is, or at least they're on par.

And I don't think it's very nice to talk about it like that. I mean, besides aesthetics, I don't like anything about GOW, yet don't call it trash.

Only played about 3-4 hours of GoW and I think I'm gonna enjoy it a lot but based on first impression, Elden Ring brings it home.

All in all it was a good year for me.

-Elden Ring
-God of War
-Return to Monkey Island
-Tunic
-Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope

That's not a big amount of games but it's great quality.

It’s the worst he could find to make a point. He’s a graphic whore anyway. He gives 2 fucks about gameplay.

The only point he ended up making was about himself. I guess he doesn't get that.

2 hours in Ragnarok and I wouldn't have been mad if it won. 10 hours in and I would be. Either way, both games are worth playing. Both are awesome.

I said months ago that if God of War R put a fight for GOTY then that was a good thing because that meant we got two kickass games this year.

First video isn't even worth responding to. You should be ashamed that you posted such trash, lol.

2nd video is a great example of why the game is so much fun, you can just dick around with friends in coop and explore the plethora of options the game throws at you. It's dumb fun in coop, completely different experience than playing solo.

That's like skipping through the God Father on YouTube and say "ehh it looks like just a bunch of ppl talking and doing stuff, nothing special"

You have to experience the moment to moment scenes. YouTube will never be the way to experience a game 🤦🏻‍♂️

Nah, it'd be like skipping through the Godfather 3 on YouTube.

That's like a contest between Trump and Clooney. But not in the Category "most suitable President" like Trump thougt... The real Category is: Who is NOT a son of a bitch!
And you can replace him with any human in this world.
EVERYONE is winning this Contest against Trump - exempt Putin, in my opinion he isn't an human anymore.

And guess what: Trump is Elden Ring in this metaphor 😌

And neither are Windjammers 2. But everyone please continue arguing over second place.
