This reminds me a lot of Mass Effect Andromeda.

Series fans hated it but it grew a new appreciative audience over time.

I like the game.

It would depend on how much development they are going to put into it in the next 2-3 years, the DLC, and also of course .. mods.

Enough people like the game to where it will have its own little bubble for a very, very long time.

Do modern video gamers really revisit games like that? I finish a game and never look at it again.

How many of those 12m downloads already dropped the game?

When 25+ million people have access to the game at no additional cost, I'm not sure that 12 million is a "great" number. In fact, I know that it isn't.

I love the cringe desire to make this game sound like a success. It clearly isn't and that is why Bethesda is writing their cringe responses on Steam because Steam sales have cratered as a result. These aren't things you do when your game is a "hit."
Starfield has an estimated 250,000 players playing rn. It oscillates but this is the average since launch. Alot of people keep using Steam numbers to justify their bs talking points as if the game is solely on Steam. Live player counters are the way to go. These counters are akin to Vgchartz. Active player in my years of experience is the best that ive come across.

If they ever make Starfield VR, I’ll revisit the game. I put over 100 hours into it. I think that’s enough 🤣

But even 100hrs is quite good..

would you go back to it if you see a mod that you like?

I've played it for about 50hrs I think and I play a bit every week, but I just don't enjoy single player games as much as I do multiplayer so that's where the majority of my times goes.

I also think that the game is wayyy to tame... its like playing a pg13 rated game, so hopefully some mods can get me a fix for that

12 million players in ~3 months sounds pretty good for a new ip given that it’s tied to the Xbox and PC. I wonder how many are from Gamepass.

I’m one of the new. Played for six hours, around that. I will go back to it and give it another spin but so far my experience has been one of absolute bemusement, it plays like a game from generations ago.

A lot of people seems to be using steam for CoD as well which makes little sense to me since I think that's the launcher with the least amount of players

The defense of this game is unparalleled only because its fate is so tied to GamePass and Xbox.

People are talking about Steam because it is verifiable and accurate data. The game has mixed reviews on Steam by verified purchasers. The game has poor Steam player counts.

That isn't to say people aren't playing this on GamePass, but that's not the measure of success. The measure of success as it pertains to GamePass is new subscribers and sustained subscribers above average (MoM and YoY). The fact that Microsoft wasn't in a rush to say here is how many new GamePass subscribers let alone here is the total, tells you everything you need to know.

The game failed to sell hardware, it failed to stay on the charts, but yes... it's secretly driving massive gamepass numbers that microsoft is keeping to themselves...

Everything we can see for ourselves bad... but everthing else? Explosive and epic success.

I just binged ‘the invincible’, the 12 hours I spent in that relatively low budget indie were more memorable, with a much more intriguing sci fi mystery, with a far better told story, writing and characters, and to be honest at times better visuals. Its “empty singular planet” made me feel small amid the wonders of the universe without its world being “boring”. The 30+ hours I spent with starfield left me feeling…nothing…oh and sleepy, as I literally fell asleep playing it several times. I told myself I’d go back to it after I dropped it for Alan wake 2… but both Alan wake, which was excellent, followed by the thematically similar invincible, by comparison have allowed me to reflect, and honestly I doubt I’ll return to starfield, which is really sad given I’ve loved their past games and they are so rare these days.

On that note. Anyone who likes a sci fi story, and likes games like firewatch, you should play the invincible.

Not a great result to be honest. Still good for a new IP though, but it seems like it was really affected by the bad word of mouth created by steam reviews and media constantly posting the negative stuff about the game. Very curious about future TES performance.

Do you understand that not everybody is playing every game? There are 100m+ consoles out there, 1b+ PCs yet there are not many games that pass 10m in sales...By your own logic, the every game is a flop because not every device owner bought it.

It is still in top 10, surpassed only by GaaS games on Xbox.
Oh now we blaming the media. The same xbox medias that gave the scores 9s and 10s. It’s always someone else’s fault and not xbox management amirite?

It's just another metric and it's harmless. Even useful, in its way. The relationship to real sales is murky though, and they are two very different things. So ms can throw out these numbers and nobody fully knows what they mean.

That aside, didn't they forecast 10m sales for a PS5 release? Spencer is dumb as hell. Read the emails. His judgement is clouded by fanboy-like emotions. The game didn't turn out that good but regardless of the quality, they chopped the sales down to at least half. Probably much further considering clicking to download for $0 is different from paying $70 for the exact same thing. $700,000,000 and 10,000,000 more heads for your 'played' metric. Poof, gone.

I enjoyed the game myself and am looking forward to the DLC but do we need to keep having threads about the game? Honestly anything with Starfield or Phil Spencer in the title becomes a shit show.

The game was hyped as one of the biggest games of the generation. Xbox fans were throwing this in the face of PlayStation fans.

This is about facing consequences.

I probably would not revisit it. To me, it’s done. I also struggle with single player games. I don’t have time to sit around for hours upon hours anymore, and if I did, I want to go out and do stuff!

I can't breath, need oxygen.

My only take away is the usual useless metric and how much money they willinginly left on the table from box sales. Shareholders and the board members should be furious.
Where is the growth if gamepass is remaining steady. They got 1 month from me, then I promptly cancelled.

I'm curious how many actual units it moved. At least half of those twelve million players could be sales.

Skyrim sold 10 million units in a month. Fallout 4 did 12 million in one day.

It's not going to experience growth. Anyone who could have played it on GamePass, would have by now. It's not selling on steam or XBS. That's why Bethesda is doing cringe responses on Steam as if that was going to be a successful community campaign.

A lot of people will say, well this was a new IP... it almost certainly was the most expensive game Bethesda has every produced.

What's worse is the reputational damage they've done.

That being said, comeback stories are a thing. They could put a lot of work into the game like Cyberpunk, but for that to happen people really need to acknowledge that it was a disaster first and push Bethesda to fix things.

There were people who defended cyberpunk, but the vast majority knew it was a faulty product. We've largely ignored the PS4 and X1 versions, but that's another story.

Dropped it after 20 hours. Extremely mediocre game and I'm very disappointed at Bethesda and MS for hyping it up as the second coming. Should've been a slam dunk and game of the generation but ended up as wet fart in space.
False. Stop lying. Jesus Christ. Anything to be over dramatic.

Seriously. If anyone thought ONE GAME would overthrow Sony and Nintendo, it's your own fault for being so gullible. Starfield is doing really well for a brand new IP and even better going up against well established titan IPs, it did great. You dont have to agree but to call it a flop is 3rd degree delusion.
