Phillip W. Spencer III:Starfield has now over 12m players since it's launch

You should see the average percentage of people who finish a whole TV series on Netflix

I think that is the problem inherent to Starfield being on GamePass.

You're devaluing gaming, so you don't feel inclined to finish the game. You didn't pay for it outright.

On top of that, you're getting a lot of people who aren't necessarily interested in the genre, who end up disappointed with it.

If you had a lot of people play Elden Ring for free, the vast majority of people wouldn't play it for more than an hour or so. I'm sure there were a lot of people who bought Elden Ring and had never played a Souls game, and either returned it or stopped playing it.

As of today Starfield is not even in top100 bestsellers anymore on Steam. It may have reached 12 million unique players so far, but actual sales must be astonishingly low. This game has no legs.

False. Fallout 4 had 473k player peak.

The game may have slight legs as there isn't much else selling GamePass. Essentially anyone who buys an XBS and GamePass will likely try out Starfield, Halo Infinite, and Forza Horizon at some point.

Even if they only play for 15 minutes, Microsoft will count them in player totals.

There aren't likely to be any major titles for Microsoft for another year plus at this point.

You don't even have to play the game for 15 minutes. All you have to do is start the executable from the Xbox dashboard. Once the "game" starts and gets to the splash screen, that counts as a "player".
