Sherlock Series 4 |OT| - Did You Miss Me?

You're a big guy.
This season is shot in an especially dynamic and inventive style. Very nice.

I really respect how far they go to be creative with the presentation. I think at times it can be a bit much and feel almost disorienting, but I can't fault them trying.

Another once great series descends into ridiculous melodrama. Sigh.

It's one thing for American series to jump the shark after seven seasons, but this show has only had a dozen episodes. Did we really need to have Watson's wife who's just had a kid jump in front of a bullet meant for Sherlock? Oh yeah, and turns out she was a super spy. Rubbish.

The latest episodes of Sherlock should have been exactly the same as the very first ones - Sherlock and Watson solving crimes. That's it. There was never any need for earth shattering plot developments that stretch credulity and the relationships of the characters. It doesn't just pull the show away from its strengths, it actually ends up compromising those strengths too.

Haven't we known that for a few years now?

Just a heads-up if you're browsing around as last night was the BFI screening for TLP so if you're wary of spoilers, you'll want to heed caution.

Ya TFP. I'm not that good at typing on my phone in the morning apparently lol.

:)

Christ, even the non-spoiler cast panel recaps are kind of spoilery, so yes. Please be on the lookout, everyone.

On a side note, of my many favorite scenes in this most recent episode, I think my single favorite is Mrs. Hudson tear-assing around London in that Aston Martin while Ode to Joy is playing. I realize Una Stubbs wasn't literally driving that car, but what a great dimension to add to her character + remind us who she actually is. In fact the entire sequence of the drive/her disarming Sherlock with the cup of tea is just aces.

Man, the first episode felt unnecessary, the longer it went, the better I could guess the ending. It would have been much more efficient if that event happened in the beginning of the seconde episode with the rest of it unchanged. The Lying Detective was brilliant from beginning to end though. Can't wait to see the last episode!

Was she a spy? Seemed more like a private mercenary group, basically like the Expendables.
Yep, I took it she was a commando for hire, not a spy hired by MI5 or anything. I think people are taking her shady past being kept secret to be a spy, but there's nothing spy-like about her.

Episode 1 would have been more impactful if instead of mary jumping in the way of a bullet, vivian had just changed targets from sherlock to mary at the last second and blasted her right away.

Ep1 was great but ep2 blew me away. Series keeps on being the best in business.

Not really, she had no idea of sherlocks and marys relationship.

So... tumblr is currently losing their collective minds over something they call "the Johnlock conspiracy" because apparently
The Final Problem is totally gonna make Johnlock canon
? Like guys, I've been witnessed the
Destiel
meltdown of 2013 in the Supernatural fandom, going down that road of false hopes only leads to shattered dreams and disappointment.

I'm am one of those shippers that roots for destiel and Johnlock, but doesn't throw a fit if it never happens. That's what fanfic is for. I keep happily shipping along.

The only I ever sailed that became canon was Spuffy, and good God I was shocked lol.

A friend of mine is deep in the TJLC fandom. Honestly I don't really care either way, but it would be funnier to not see it become canon and watch the meltdown, so I guess this once I'm on the side of heteronormativity...

Most of the people in the NorCal Sherlock group are hardcore TJLC fans.

I couldn't care less but my God, some of their rants have given me headaches at meet-ups lol. I have found that sitting, smiling and nodding works best during rant sessions.

A bit wary of joining several of them at the theater screening on Monday but hopefully it'll be fine.

Honestly, great coping mechanism

Yeah but it would have made sense with how at the very end she was just trying to be unpreditable and she'd still die basically because of sherlock's hubris but instead of mary choosing sherlock over her sherlock would have basically been completely at fault.

At least in my opinion.

Its kinda bunk that Sherlock can exactly predict the events that will happen 2-3 weeks later, but not what could happen by bringing Mary and John to the confrontation of the secretary.

Ep2 was much better than 1. Cumberbatch killing it. Toby Jones' character was somewhat on the nose (would love to have been in the BBC writers' room when someone suggested that deathmatch), but played suitably creepy by Jones, who is an acting treasure.

The very end of the episode was ridiculous and unnearned, but I may not have been paying attention.

I didn't really care for this either. It felt like too much of a leap with the cane and the therapists house.

It's super ridiculous indeed but it's sold so well I'm happily buying it.
I mean a secret third sibling who is also a super smart high functioning evil sociopath who devised everything from seducing John to disguise herself as a fever dream? It's silly on the page but everything else made it work.

It's a bit much...but I think what they're trying to portray is that Sherlock can predict what someone will do if he knows them well enough. He's had years to study John, so he has a handle on his behavior. Someone new has the potential to surprise him. Which is where the hubris comes in. He underestimated Norbury because he was too busy being theatrical. He thought once the game was over she'd just be cleanly cleared off the table.

oh the leak is a voice over? not just subtitled?? boooo i wanted to watch it

episode 2 was pretty good but it would have been way better without ghost mary

Episode 1 - little late to the party but wow....just....wow....that was embarrassing. What happened to this show's writing? :C

Sincerely hope the quality picks up from here

I'm sooooo happy Marry is gone. Like tears of joy. Let me explain.

This show and its writers are superb. But the introduction of Mary has ruined what made this show great, the dynamic between Sherlock and John and the rest as side characters. Gatiss is actually a capable writer if he sticks to his strengths. T6T wasn't bad but the issues it had were whenever the Mary arc popped up. Up until the Mary revelation it was a great episode. You could tell the episode felt so up and down and didn't click as a whole because of the Mary plotline. This is promising now. No more Mary bringing the show down. And I actually liked Mary at the start as a strong side character. No one except Sherlock and John should ever take the main stage. It just ruins the dynamic.

Now that she's death the show is back to its glory days. Just pure fun.
Can we applaud Benedict for his tour de force performance ? I mean I could watch that guy act all day. What an actor.

So yeah LOVED The Lying Detective. The ending was such a mindf I loved it. It was twist after twist and it all made sense. Also nice twist on the ''brother''.

So if I didn't like season 3 (felt like a show doing fan service with the first episode & felt like a show trying to hard to be a Sherlock clone) should I even bother with checking out Season 4?

Well that was... a thing. Still the tumblr fandom has lost it's god damned mind. I haven't seen a meltdown this big over any series in ages.

Well, that was the entire point of the scene.
Overconfident Sherlock provokes her, expecting a rational reaction, because Sherlock only thinks on rational terms. But she didn't act rationaly and shot.
Hence Sherlock asking Mrs. Hudson to bring him down to earth the next time he acts cocky.

I don't think anything could have made it impactful, but this would have been better, yeah. Then it would have also made more sense for Sherlock to blame himself compared to her deciding herself to catch it.

So it has not been confirmed but there are rumors going around that the leaked episode is not the real one that is premiering tonight.

One of the composers had this to say when asked why there was no new music in the leaked episode https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C2O5ZZHWEAEKIE_.jpg

Who knows if this is true or not but I thought I would let people know just in case you were not planning on watching the episode today since you already saw the leaked version.

Edit: Never rmind it was the same.
