Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart |OT| Next-gen just got riveting....

Even with its 1996 graphics, SM64 is still magical.

Everything was great at a certain time, Mario 3 on Nintendo Family Computer (NES) was extremely addictive, and that was early 1990's. MGS1 was insanely good back then and one of the greatest of all time, now I might puke if I force myself to play it.

Live from NeoGAF, it's Friday Night!
What not to love about the game?!

Sound design is again through the roof here, as with any Sony games lately.
Also the clarity of the sounds and the whole mixdown is just perfect.

Tried a proper 5.1 system, i killer stereo setup at a friends house and headphones between 50€ and 2000€ with the game.

Superb!

Returnal is still in another league in terms of position tracking through headphones.

Both are loaded into memory though... that's just the same visual effect as Portal/Portal 2. Super cool looking though.

edit: I should say, that's what it looks like to me, since you can see the level on the other side of the portal, that portion is already loaded.

This is an interesting interview. Worth watching the entire thing. But it's time stamped to an section to reply to you.

I think that depends on the dimensional switch that they use. This would certainly he true for the dimensional jumps that have those short transitions.

But for the ones where both levels are loaded at once it probably isn't true.

It's still amazing how they are using the I/O though. A lot of what they are doing is only possible with an SSD. By possible I mean where it doesn't make the game really annoying to play and the experience gets ruined.

Worthwhile to watch the entire video ... Or the timestamped version. Unless you are saying you know more how the game runs that he does?

I read about how they do those that instant transitions and he said that they load part of the level that you go to. To be specific they load what you can see through the portal.

This is what I'm talking about BTW. Depending on the type of transition influences what's loaded into memory.

Yes. And? The data needed for the view is pulled from the drive. Devs words. If you have proof he is incorrect, I'm all ears.

"That portion is already loaded".. if you can see it, it's part of the view.. honestly not sure what you are on about lol.. has little to do with what the dev said, clearly what is visible through the portal is part of the current view.

The dev is being hyperbolic either way... they aren't switching worlds in 1/30th or 1/60th of a second.

Yes. Correct. But that is obvious no? If you can see it on screen, it needs to be loaded. The initial point was both worlds are in memory. That is incorrect. They load specifically only what is needed to render the next frame, pulled from the drive. Dev's words.

This was my original point.. not even sure what you linked me to or why you think it's relevant.

For Portal/Portal 2 ... both views are resident in memory to allow you to switch between them. You said R&C looked to be doing the same thing. After watching the video, do you still think this?

Yes, I believe what you can see on screen is in memory lol

I said in that particular video, they are just showing stuff that's already in memory, with a portal effect... what are you even arguing? It's all in memory, it's all visible...

The other world switches are doing a lot more data loading, is my point..

So when you walk through, both the world behind you and the 'new' world both reside in memory to you?

I'm not disagreeing with that I'm just saying it depends on the transition that they want to do. And in the video they talk about the different types that they have.

Again I'm not taking a dump on the PS5s I/O. I personally believe it's the most impressive part of the system. I'm just saying that for Ratchet the I/O changes depending on the transitions that they want to do. If it's seamless then they have assets loaded from both worlds. If it isn't then they just pull everything from the SSD. That's why some jumps have those transition screens.

The transitions are so fast that they feel like they're part of the gameplay instead of loading screens.

Just a quick joke but...anyone playing this at 30fps is a monster!

Just tried it for like 20 minutes. Never mind the perceived fluidity and motion image taking a hit it feels so sluggish to play. When I move the right stock to aim it feels like forever to get a reaction.

But the actual game...sublime! What a treasure insomniac are! Love this shit!

Could it also be the size of the world that they are loading in? Those 'real time' portals go to a area which is pretty small. The ones with the animation tend to load in a more open area which is more visually busy.

There was another video posted on Twitter with someone having issues with slow loading of the 'real time' portal as they switch between worlds. There was like a 1-2 sec lag. Can't find it now. That would indicate the game is pulling from the drive, pretty much as the dev said they are.

Darkness no more
Ending sections ended up being a bit longer. My full story play through ended up clocking 10 hours.

I never said this.

You said that it is doing the same thing has portal.

In portal you have everything on both side of the portal loading so you would have the entirery of level 1 and level 2.
In Ratchet you load only what you can see so you will have something like 70% of level 1 and 10% of level 2(random numbers to get the gist)

I am no furry, but you gotta appreciate Rivet's character design. It makes Ratchet look bad. She looks like a cut pet you might want. Her animations are top notch. She is voiced with a kind of energy and spunk Ratchet simply doesnt have. I hate this focus on making every lead protagonist boring and realistic so this is a welcome change in pace. She reminds me of Ellie in the first last of us.

I would be ok with Ratchet getting retired after this game and Rivet taking over. She's that good.
