Sherlock: The Abominable Bride |OT| 19th Century, My Dear Watson

Why did Sherlock have to OD to realise of course you can't shoot yourself in the head and survive?!

Sorry I just either wish we'd got a special that was 100% 19th Century Sherlock or 100% Moriarty: If I Did It, not a bizarre WHAT IF? combination of the two. The bit at the end where the imaginary 19C Sherlock and Watson are talking about "flying machines" had me cringing so hard.

Think it would have been better as a purely standalone episode with maybe some nods to the series, but it was enjoyable and not complicated at all.

To be fair, the fanservice-y humour was probably the best in the series. Personally, I wasn't expecting to have a fast-one pulled on me by Moffat (which is silly of me in hindsight -- I guess Doctor Who was so predictable lately that I forgot he does this), so I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. But yeah, the whole Victorian story went nowhere, but that's pretty much the case with the original story. It's the kind of episode I'd appreciate more if it wasn't the first episode in two years and no next season in sight.

I'll definitely have to watch it again.

For me my mind just felt so sluggish being new year and couldn't keep up or concentrate....

Dodging the rest of this thread at the moment to ask: is there anything in the special that would spoil series 3 for someone who hasn't seen it yet? A friend is interested but isn't caught up.

Yes, they're better off watching series 3 first.

“The special is its own thing,” Moffat told EW before attending a panel at the South by Southwest conference on Monday. “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”

That was brilliant. I normally hate
dream sequences
, but that was so well done.

Wife loved it too. Enjoy US GAF.

the point wasn't that shot to head=death it was to stop obsessing over Moriarty (essentially, get over him, kick the habit) and focus on the relevant details.

Not saying it was necessary, but still.

It has been fucking ages since they've actually solved a case. I just want some fucking detective work.

So much time was wasted doing the same things over and the Mycroft food parts were like some kids show.

Overall I enjoyed it.

The difference between the reaction to this and the Doctor Who special is telling.

I personally thought it was on the weak end, even for Sherlock. (Of course, bad Sherlock is still better than a lot of telly out there)

Yes, I'm sure it all looked quite clever on paper, but on the screen it's a bit of a hot mess. The titular mystery doesn't really get enough development because they wanted to run around Victorian London meeting all the Sherlock characters. This causes it to drag so much in the middle that I started browsing Amazon.

Having it be a dream of Modern!Sherlock is a nice twist, but the moment that everything starts to bleed together it starts to be a problem - have we actually uncovered the secret of the Bride or not? Oh, we must have done, because now we're onto Moriarty. But now we're back to the Bride. But...

I don't think it's especially complicated, actually. I think people saying it is is a consequence of the writing not really developing any of the three plots it's trying to keep spinning at the same time, same reason why the 'Rey is a Mary Sue' bullshit comes in part from her character being a bit underdeveloped initially

oh and WE GET IT MOFFAT, YOU LIKED INCEPTION
we don't need you to remake it twice on a cheaper budget

This too.

6.5/10 for me.

I really liked it.
My brother felt the modern stuff was unnecessary and ruined the pacing.
My Dad enjoyed it but was confused, he had been to the pub earlier so that may have been a factor.

I tought that was pretty great.

Only thing that felt weird was
that whole waterfall sequence at the end.
. I didn't really get that part.

I enjoyed it but I do kind of wish it was just 100% Victorian. It didn't need to tie into what is coming next.

Oh well, only a billion more years until the next season.

I liked it a lot.

You're all acting like just a pure Victorian special for its own sake wouldn't have been purest fan service. At least this tied into things and moved the plot along.

See you all this time next year for series 4.
