You can blame me Argentina fans. I am now 100% on picking losing teams to root for. All Atlanta, Georgia Tech, USA, OKC during this recent NBA playoffs and now Argentina. Ugh. I think I need to quit watching sports.

HAHAHAHAH OMG

I'll give Chile credit they're a resilient team with multiple world-class players and great team play. They slayed the Spain witch and beat Messi in 2 finals. Messi was broken like a teenage girl on the sidelines. Those are amazing feats that validate Chile's class.

I wonder if this tournament will bump them up in Fifa ranking, maybe number 2?

We've seen clubs assemble GOAT level players before and other than Arrigo Sachi's AC Milan. No one has ever produced the level of play Barcelona has demonstrated in the last decade. The one constant has been Messi.

Man, I say this as a Madridista, but what made those teams unstoppable were Xavi and Iniesta.

Neither Barcelona nor Spain have been as dominant since Xavi declined and left. He was the master behind all of that in my mind.

Messi is a once in a generation talent and one of the greatest of all times, but the dearth of titles with the national team will always be a black mark against him.

This is a team with guys like DiMaria, Higuain, Aguero, Messi, Mascherano, etc. It's not some second tier roster.

I'm going to disagree with this completely. If you want to be the best of all time you absolutely have to show up in moments like this. What a choke job.

Stuff happens...no man is infallible. Messi has done things in the game no man has ever done. Cruyff never won a World Cup and I put him above Maradonna. If the greatest is defined purely by World Cups and international trophies, then Pele surely is the best of all time.

But it's all opinions really because Maradonna or Pele never played in the modern game. The comparisons are impossible. Messi skill and ability has been demonstrated beautifully and his numerous achievements on the field in my opinion are the greatest I have seen.

Fact of the matter is Argentina collectively have been poor given the talent pool, Messi has carried them through many games...but no man can do it alone, for the most part.

Argentina could easily have won this game with Messi performing at the exact same level in defeat...his legacy would have been the same to anyone who understands the modern game.

"The next Copa America will be in 2019. Brazil will be the host of that one."

ARE YOU GOING TO TELEVISE THIS IN THE UNITED STATES FOX?
Wait, past Copa America weren't televised in the US in English? Does Fox even hold the rights for the next Copa?

Will we go back to 10 CONMEBOL teams + 2 invitees?

Will we really have to go back to playing Gold Cups every two years?

Yeah it's going to suck going back to the old format after this one.

I'm sure the people who prefer the old one are a very small minority but FIFA don't care.

Can we do this Copa ActuallyAmerica every 4 years now? What an incredibly exciting tournament all around.

Lot of really good games, much more exciting than the Euro so far for my money.

Messi is better than Maradona but you are understating the value of those two Serie A titles with Napoli. That was truly remarkable feat especially when you consider that arguably the greatest team of all time played only a few hours north of them.

Maradona's among one of the five greatest players ever. You can make the Messi Maradona argument in good faith, but to say that Messi can't be greater than Maradona without a world cup title is not that.

Strikers have been disastrous under pressure, but there are more enough replacements for the team and young to boot.

The question is who is going to coach Arg now. As disastrous as Martino is, i can't think of a good coach that would abandon his current team. It'll be just another bastard with no plan.

Catch Gold Cup fever everyone! It's like dysentery but probably won't kill you.

If the checks clear this tourney will be back. Probably squeezed into the same place it is this cycle. The other tourneys will remain.

Seriously.

Plus having it being played in the same year as the Eurocup makes for a pretty exciting football filled summer. I'd say fuck playing in 2019. Make a Copa ActuallyAmerica in 2020 in Brazil with 16 teams.

I'd like to think that after this Copa (I'm sure the most successful of all time by a mile) these conversations are going to be had within CONCACAF and CONMEBOL.

As far as I know merging this Copa is the confeds decision. Not FIFA's.

Agreed. Cruyff never won it, granted he only played in one WC, but he and the Dutch team certainly left a lasting impression on the game. To be frank Argentina has been rather boring given the amount of attacking talent they have had since Messi first broke into the scene.

Bring back Sabella man. At least when the team lost it wasn't his fault and he understood how to manage the team.

He wouldn't have put an injured Di Maria in the field, what kind of decision was that?

The 2011 Copa was on Univision (and streamed on YT in English if I remember correctly) in the US
2015 was BeIN Sports in the US

As far as I know, Fox only had the rights to Copa Centanario and the hosting rights to the 2019 Copa in the US haven't been decided yet.

Honestly, i think Messi is the best eva, but im glad he lost by choking up a penalty, his supporters are so annoying, like man one would think they would learn after watching him fail over and over again with Argentina but probably next time he scores a normal goal against a below average team they are gonna act like we just witnessed the second coming of christ.

Yeah confederations are in charge of organizing their tournaments. The only thing the confeds really have to do is decide who they send to play in the FIFA-organized World Cup every 4 years.

I'm sure after the huge success of Centenario that CONMEBOL and CONCACAF will seriously consider holding the Copa Panamerica every 4 years from this point forward. They're leaving ungodly sums of money on the table otherwise and we all know international football/soccer is powered by the money engine.

They still need to get someone to have domestic English broadcast rights for the regular Copa America though, I tried to watch it on Telemundo once and cannot into Espanol made it an impossible quest for me.

BeIN Sports? Do people watch that channel? If ESPN is A-tier and Fox Sports is B-tier would you say BeIN is up there with Fox or lower? First time I hear about that channel.

Michel Platini never won it either. Neither did Paolo Maldini, ditto for the incomparable Zico and Socrates.

Their brilliance never questioned. Their legacies always secure. Yet somehow it's only Messi who's judged solely by a tournament that happens every 4 years.

Romanes Eunt Domus
Copa América 2004 - Argentina 2nd Place
Confederations Cup 2005 - Argentina 2nd Place
Copa América 2007 - Argentina 2nd Place
World Cup 2014 - Argentina 2nd Place
Copa América 2015 - Argentina 2nd Place
Copa América Centenario 2016 - Argentina 2nd Place

I mean... you can blame Tata, or Messi, or Higuaín, but at some point it has to go beyond what happens on the field.

Also congrats on the Chileans! I had an inkling it would end up this way after the Mexico game. Can't be that sore after you became champions.
I just realised Mascherano played in five of those finals.

Maybe you guys are blaming the wrong player.

That's because none of them live under Maradona's shadow.

Oh. Yet another person underrating Iniesta ;( he's been every bit of good and important as Messi for Barcelona.

And btw what im saying goes for Ronaldo as well. Im of the opinion that Spanish super teams have skewed things too muc this past decade. They're certainly historically great players but I don't think they're that much better than for example Zidane or Brazil Ronaldo individually, but look better smashing la liga. Likewise I don't think Suarez now is better than what he was in Liverpool but looks better by virtue of being in Barcelona.

BeIN is a solid D-tier channel in terms of broadcast quality.

But they have rights to half of the European leagues (Ligue 1, Serie A, La Liga) in the US so...

That hurts. It's still wonderful to watch Messi play. Even my family who barely has seen a single match was like who is that dude because he's working magic with the ball.

Messi is very good but his lack of win with his national team stops him from being the best ever

Congrats Chile.

Btw, Maradonna missed a crucial penalty kick in the 1990 quarterfinals, but the keeper bailed their team out. Baggio missed a penalty to lose the World Cup final in '94.

No one is immune to missing penalty kicks, not even the very best. Argentina had their chances during regular time but Higuain and Aguaro missed sitters.
