I truly don't understand this. What is there to be so upset about? Why is such a vocal group of men on the internet so anti-women?

My sex/gender is constantly embarassing me when I go online.

Because I'm naively optimistic/idealistic.
Then skip the Hollywood schlock and go watch the original films getting made! The award winners of the big film festivals would be a good place to start.

There is a lot of latent misogyny out there, and subjects like this give them an excuse to vent without being accused of being misogynistic. It's similar to dogwhistle racism.

I fucking called it but people were like,"Ocean's 11 doesn't have the rabid fanbase of Ghostbusters" when that's not the point. These types just want to hate on anything that pushes women to the fore. They could remake some obscure 50's film 5 people have ever seen with all women and these trolls would be coming out of the woodwork claiming to be the biggest fans and that a female version will ruin the original.

Plenty of movies are made every year that feature or star mainly women and don't get hated on for it.

Nobody hated on Mad Max for having a strong female presence.

Hollywood thinks they can take old IPs and just replace the male characters with female equivalents but with minimal effort into the rest of the movie, and that audiences will just lap it up.

Like if they remade the Charlie's Angels movies and gave Charlie a female voice, and turned the angels into men, would you watch that? It they turned Bosley into a bumbling female idiot, do you think that would be well received?

If they remade the Pretty Woman movie and turned Julia Roberts into a gay escort, do you think that would do well?

If they made a Wonder Man movie, because they don't think audiences would buy the notion that a woman can be a super hero? Would you be ok with that?

What Hollywood is doing is tired and insulting. Sure some trolls are having fun with that, but don't dismiss the broader message of the movement just because of one or two bad apples.

I certainly do. I just always hope it will bleed over into the mainstream a bit more. The artistry, writing, exposition of characters etc.

They are threatened by women who are just as capable as them and their self worth is directly aligned to them being able to have power over women. People with privilege dont see equality as a good thing they see it as oppression and taking away from their misguided ideas on how society should continue to be.

What exactly is the broader message of the movement? I really want to hear this. Also Fury Road got a lot of shit from MRA's over focusing on women and feminist ideas. I'm not even sure what you're getting at with your examples because much of what you said is exactly the problem here.

If they remade pretty women with a gay escort it would get all manner of shit from the same types. That's the issue, they don't really give a shit about the movie or movie series, they just want to shit on women, gays, trans gendered folks and anyone pushing for a more "PC" culture.

It's not going to happen given how much money films cost and the potential earnings. Back in 1980, Heaven's Gate was a financial disaster and it sank a major studio - its budget was only $44 million. Even taking inflation into account, that's nothing compared to modern budgets.

I've been trying to think of an eloquent way to put that idea for ages now. This is perfect.

Yeah, the huffpo journalist thought so too when they wrote it originally

There will be some people who hate on the movie because of alt-right anti feminism/MRA bullshit, but there will also be legitimate criticism that it seems to be a creatively bankrupt cash grab. But with Ghostbusters looking like it will make a loss, it will be interesting to see if this movie makes it off the ground.

If any studio claims they want to make legitimate and original female fronted movies, they are going to have to swallow the fact that the first few movies will be slated by many, and might not make any money, but eventually people will get used to them and accept them as the norm. It's sad but it is the case.

Yep, and there was a movement to boycott the movie because it was a feminist film in disguise.

eh? I'm really not sure what rocks people are looking under to find this stuff. I've never seen anyone complain about her character in mad max.

Yup. Look at the budgets of blockbusters from the 80s.

Return of the Jedi - $30-40M
Ghostbusters- $30M
Temple of Doom - $28M
Aliens - $18M

All of those would be between $40-95M at 2016 values.

The average inflation adjusted cost of a blockbuster has probably tripled in the past 30 years, while the inflation adjusted grosses of said films have barely changed. As such, the stakes are a lot higher and fewer chances are taken.

Oh yes, they did. Don't make shit up.

We had Ghostbusters. And this. This is a sequel. The horror.

Things are well received if it is excecuted well?

Are you looking for the word lesbian?

So like a Superman movie?

This is a parody post, isn't it?

You are way, way off-base about Mad Max. That's the prototype of the MRA film protests.

And Hollywood typically reboots old IPs with even less effort. Swapping the gender is already a more-creative direction.

10 stories of excess from the production of Heaven's Gate. What difference do "modern budgets" mean if the production company doesn't have the cash to withstand going 4X over budget? And despite all that, Heaven's Gate is a great movie.

Clearly the only way to deal with this is a hashtag battle.

Saw the Criterion's edition a few months ago, and it's a terrible movie in my opinion. Mostly because of the editing, wooden acting and pace, the cinematography is amazing in the restored version, compared to the brownish hell of the original, but other than that is nothing special.

#FeministAMovie James Bond - the spy who sexually objectified me

Is this one supposed to be pro or anti feminist? because, ya know, james bond is actually a pretty damn misogynistic character and the criticism would be quite legit.

That Hollywood thinks that it can rejuvenate old franchises by just swapping out the male characters for female equivalents and just call it a day. It's not that complicated...

Mad Max, Charlie's Angels, Pretty Woman, and Wonder Woman are all examples of movies/franchises that have been commercially successful and critically well-received, while at the same time featuring strong female characters/presence. That was the point of listing them as examples.

If was really true that audiences at large just blindly hated on movies for featuring women in them. Those movies would have never done well, or potentially even been green lit.

The recent gender swapping is very blatant pandering to what Hollywood thinks audiences want to see, and the feminizeAMovie hashtag is bringing light to the situation by flanderizing the movie titles.

This isnt true. We had a thread about it and the attempted boycott last year.

In all fairness, I don't think the outrage over a strong female character in a movie with a male lead (and titular character) was all that big. He is also (by far) the most prominent character in the official trailer/marketing.
There are many and much better examples of movies that helped some people suddenly develop a strong interest in ethics.

Pretty Woman is very sexist.

Fury Road Road received backlash for the strong women.

Wonder Woman hasn't been released.

Charlie's Angels are critically panned.

So this is another "movement" based completely on missinformation?

Well I'm not sure what movement you were talking about then. I thought you were speaking about the people hating on the films for no good reason except women or being PC or whatever hurt their masculine sensibilities.

This isn't a movement, this is just Hollywood 101. Remember when Transformers was a hit and they started pumping out big budget action movies based on every other popular toy or board game they could get the rights too? This isn't some movement, this is just the suits trying to capitalize on the current zeitgeist. There is no movement and I think you're either reading into this far too much or just talking out your ass as Wonder Woman isn't out and the Charlie's Angels movies were all turds for the critics.

And again there was indeed a backlash from the usual suspects about the strong female focus of Mad Max.

i didn't see ghostbusters because i thought it looked kinda bad but even the people who were critical didn't say that it was just the original movie with a gender-swapped cast.

and be down on this phenomenon if you like (though 2 movies doesn't seem like a trend to me) but don't be blind to the fact that people are jumping on this hashtag to make sexist jokes, not out of any place of genuine criticism.

Oh look, it's Ghostbusters all over again. I bet it will be pinned as the worst movie of all time before it hits theatres.

I think will is the operative word here.
Pretty much, for decades we've been given subpar remakes and sequels to properties from the 70's to 90's. Anything people are nostalgic for will get made into a movie, and every time it's met with skepticism because it's so obvious that it's a money grab aimed for the adults that remember their favorite childhood things. But since Ghostbusters it seems like this exact same complaint it ruined by people butt hurt about it starring women, when really the normal people just rather them leave old properties alone.

You know what would actually show Hollywood's confidence and dedication to be progressive? Making well made original properties starring women, made by women, that can be enjoyed by women along with all sorts of other groups. Instead they may be going down a path that show very little confidence by just remaking properties with distaff counterparts. Any big movie now days that stars a woman in the lead is an established property which is fine, I loved the new Star Wars, Mad Max, and the Hunger Games series because it felt like there was some actual effort put into these sequels/adaptations. The problem is two fold, first Holly wood doesn't want to make something original because something already proven to have a following is safer. Second women aren't usually put into action lead roles which sucks because people love well done female leads like Ripley, Korra, Furiosa, and the Bride.

Why does it have to be a reboot of Oceans 11? Why not give it a new name?

It's not like Hollywood hasn't done that over and over and over again.

I mean take Spy, could have just called it Get Smart, or Alice Powers, or something, right?

Reboots already have a hard enough time

This is how I feel. It just comes across as lazy and creatively bankrupt. But on the other hand, as it's been said, it's totally understandable that something with an established name has better chances of being greenlit so if this is how we get more leading women in movies and make the MRA cry then so be it!

So, because studios are giving audiences what they think they want it's a problem. How is that different than greenlighting a dozen super hero movies, a new Star Wars series, a Magnificent 7 remake, movies based on recent topical events, or a movie based on a popular TV show?
Those are all blatant attempts to grab peoples money so why does it only seem to be a problem in the case of putting an all female cast?

I hope people complaining about originality also take issue with superhero movies and Star Wars.

Go watch Paterson and La La Land this year. Also Arrival.

People absolutely talked about super hero fatigue, the thing is that it's hard to say it's a problem when all of the marvel movies are actually pretty well made with fun bits of fanservice and pretty decent performances and characters.

Star Wars the general consensus was "hey JJ did a great Job with the first Star Trek and he has a pretty spielburgian style to film making." Also things can't get worse than the prequels.

But really think about Robocop remake, think about Battleship, Total Recall, Transformers 2, Man of Steel, the Amazing spider man. All of them were sort of met with middling to bad reviews from the average movie goer that cared about the things they were based on. Sure some of them made money but I remember there being a lot of negative feelings towards the lack of originality.
