AP: Dashcam video shows officer firing 7 shots into Castile car

Fuck this racist goon. He's calmly and politely informed of the firearm and automatically assumes Castile is a thug who will try to murder him at the first sign of movement. How are you supposed to reach for your ID at that point? Did he really think Castile would tell him about the gun if his intent was to pull it on him? Why do the people in a position of power have the right to slaughter others as soon as they feel uncomfortable?

Prosecutors can't get the heat for what is a consistent pattern of juries giving outright deference to the emotional state of trained professionals where they'd give no such quarter to a civilian. This is a problem with society, not an individual prosecutor.

I wish a prosecutor would make this point during a trial at some point.

Yes, assume the majority of police are bad. Really speaks about your thought process and maturity. I hope you are never on any jury of any case in fear for those involved.

There will always be authority needed, and common sense that not all, not even the majority are bad. Not even half. Thus if you really fear or hate every officer in the US, if you live here, leave. Its not changing. Forever be a pawn to the media who loves to put out material on every bad case, yet dismiss the far less juicy articles of events on a daily basis handled correctly and the heroic events.

I realize others have responded to you and you may consider this dogpiling but I'll say this anyway. Within the Black community, the reputation of police are well known, this has happened since the conception of the US, if you think this is a new media craze then go into Black communities that can tell you tales of police escalation, violence, and murder spanning generations. I would dare you to tell them and me, that it's just media material.

At the end of the day, police are, and I said this in other topics as well, they are 100% responsible for their reputation. That is not a fact that is up for discussion or disputable. If they wanted to change public perception they would, they would work and change the police force. But so-called good cops, turn a blind eye to bad ones, and bad ones get away with murder. So skepticism of the police force is well warranted.

As a Black male living in the US I never feel safe when an office is present. I just don't. When the police decide to change then maybe I can have a change of heart. But I will say this, Black skepticism doesn't fill prisons with bodies or kill citizens and not face punishment. Complacency makes a person party to in the police force. And telling African Americans to leave....umm we weren't products of immigration.

May Castile rest and peace.

The officer thought that Castille would shoot him because Castille was smoking in front of his daughter...

He's a monster.

That anyone bought that nonsense when he shot seven times into the car with said child and another passenger is infuriating. He deserves no fucking sympathy.

People asking how the jury came to this conclusion should look up the batshit insane guidelines they were given for their verdict.

Edit: and no that doesn't fucking mean I think they made the right choice. Dude was murdered.

The officer told him not to reach. If he was reaching then it's not his fault. The officer was clearly distraught at how things played out too, shaking and everything. To call him a monster is a beyond the pale IMO. It didn't seem malicious. Yes it could have been handled differently but the officer likely has PTSD now.

***disclaimer*** I feel even worse about Catillo getting killed. Fuckinh tragic.

Listen to this Richard Pryor joke from 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf3ZiSZPMYU

The officer is a monster he killed an innocent man and then instead of doing the right thing and admit he was wrong he smeared the man who he killed reputation all in an effort to save himself. The City and tax payers will end up footing the bill again as they put a price tag on Philando's corpse and the cycle will continue.

If you have issue with police in this country, tough shit.
if you live here, leave.
or become white.
I would imagine either would work for J-Rzez.

Were "I wasn't reaching" his dying words? This murder and trial result are tragic, heartbreaking, and infuriating beyond description. There are no condolences immense enough to adequately express how sickening and saddening this is.

Yep. To add: talk to any old Italians, Irish, or Polish people in this country. They'll have stories of police abuse, too. Almost every ethnicity, even those now considered White, have a long and well documented history of suffering and discrimination at the hands of police in this country. And all of it, throughout history, is clearly known by multiple generations to have been motivated by racism. Every major police department in the country has a long and documented history (and present) of extensive corruption.

When we look at pictures from the Civil Rights Movement, it is police officers who are on the malicious end of high pressure water hoses and beatings. To this day, white Baby Boomers will tell you how horrible the Kent State shootings were. White people in rural areas will tell you how police like to flaunt their local power. Every white kid who grows up in the suburbs knows that certain officers in their neighborhood will try to stick you with bullshit tickets to fill quotas, or creep on women. Or has another white friend who has family in the force so gets away with shit. Every white kid who grows up in the suburbs alongside minority friends can tell you how much more often those friends get pulled over.

Everybody in this country knows that law enforcement as an institution is rotten to the core in myriad ways. I personally know some police officers, know that they try their best as individuals to help people, and as a white guy from the suburbs who grew up around minorities I still say this. It is documented fact, and it is in the history, folklore, and pop culture of every ethnicity and income bracket. But when that police abuse comes down on minority demonstrations and citizens, so much of the country is suddenly willing to defend the honor and sanctity of law enforcement to the last.

Suddenly a situation reminiscent of Kent State is much less terrible. The protesters deserved it. Suddenly a situation reminiscent of past ethnic abuse, even against their own blood, feels more distant. That was so long ago! It's just the media outrage machine! Suddenly all the childhood experiences of neighborhood impropriety are forgotten. The cops were only abusing their power, it was harmless.

Every time a tragedy like this occurs too much of the country suddenly find themselves knee deep in insincere bullshit of their own making, defending institutions that have abused them in ways large and small for decades. Unwilling to believe that people are actually suffering these injustices, despite their extensive historical precedent, simply because they refuse to do so. It's willful and malicious ignorance. It's privilege in action. It's racism. The institutions and the country feed each other's injustices, and it's a self sustaining oppression machine.

I cannot imagine having to endure the constant and consistent existential stress, anger, and sadness that people of color experience from these events.

He was pulled over because Yanez claimed he had the "wide set nose" of a robbery suspect. Yanez tells Castile he is being pulled over for a brake light, but that wasnt the real reason.
This has me super triggered because a similar situation happened to me in Arkansas. This was a few years before it became common place to hear about black men being slain in mass, but as I was pulling into a restaurant to meet some friends for lunch, an officer pulled up behind me, blocking me in. No lights. No siren. I was unaware of this, so I start to get out of my car. I hear from behind me "get back in your car." Confused,I turn around to see an officer with his hand on his pistol, who then reiterates " GET BACK IN YOUR CAR " (FUN FACT: This particular officer had been shot the year before in a college apartment drug bust! The fact that he wasn't fully drawn and ready to fire seems like a miracle at this point.)
My friends are all in the restaurant watching this go down.

He tells me he pulled me over for my broken taillight lens and gives me a ticket. I learn later from one of my friends who was watching everything (and has ties to the local police) that the real reason I was pulled over that day was because my car and "features" supposedly matched that of someone they were looking for. So black with dreads. Any number of people. I got the ticket because I got out of the car and gave the cop "attitude". Now imagine if I had actually given the cop some attitude for stealth stopping me while I was hungry and embarrassing me in front of my friends, which I've literally seen white women do.

Nevermind. Not trying to argue. This entire thing is a tragedy.

I'm impressed that you literally all lives mattered a cop murdering a black man.

No I'm actually not impressed at all.

It's a tragedy in one direction only: an innocent man is dead, family has been shattered and the murderer walked scott free

The fact he shot him 7 times suggests at the very least that he wasn't a very well trained officer. One shot to the legs would have been enough to deter any perceived aggression.

I'm not discounting the fact it's straight up murder, and likely race fuelled.

If the police dont want to be associated with the bad apples, then they should stop protecting them when they kill innocent people. You dont get to defend these fuckers and shield them from public scrutiny and then get to be absolved for not being one of them. Theyre directly contributing to the problem.

The majority of cops aren't bad.

All cops are bad.

There are no good cops.

Good cops get chased out of the job for standing up to brutality. Good cops get fired when they talk down a mentally ill man instead of shooting him. Good cops get forced into mental institutions when exposing corruption.

Good cops very quickly stop being cops.

“I thought, I was gonna die,” Yanez later recounted about the moments leading up to the shooting, “and I thought if he’s, if he has the, the guts and the audacity to smoke marijuana in front of the five year old girl and risk her lungs and risk her life by giving her secondhand smoke and the front seat passenger doing the same thing then what, what care does he give about me. And, I let off the rounds and then after the rounds were off, the little girls [sic] was screaming.”

This is so horrible. Where is the nation's sympathy for this murdered man and his family? This shit makes you so angry.

Smoking marijuana is more harmful to a 5 year old than pulling off 7 rounds right next to her in a car and killing her father right in front of her eyes. America 2017.

Have to wonder whether he actually did, or whether he was just putting his papers back where he took it from.

He told the officer he had a firearm after he was handed back his papers.3

That officer could've killed everyone in that car though......reaching into the damn vehicle with his gun.....firing one handed while panicking.....firing shot after shot with an innocent woman and child in the vehicle.

Piece of shit.

Do something else. Find another fucking job.

How about go to prison for the rest of your life for murdering an innocent person?

Maybe the cop was shook because he knew that this was JUST another of the FIFTY PLUS times they'd be stopping Philando Castile, harassing him and letting him go with no charges, citations or ANYTHING.

If you've spent 14 years harassing one guy you know by now isnt doing a fucking thing wrong, then yeah maybe you're gonna be a scared piece of shit now you know he has a gun.

Maybe you'll think he got it to finally end the years of harassment.

How about go to prison for the rest of your life for murdering an innocent person?

Oh, that can happen?

I'm sorry, I thought this was America.

Really is depressing to go on news.com.au's Facebook page with the story and just seeing the ignorance and casual racism from my fellow Aussies.

"So the Mexican cop is racist towards the African American civilian? I didn't get that bit in the video. If the civilian had followed the instructions given to him he would still be alive today."

"Easy to judge someone who has to expect that they could lose their lives every time they pull someone over. I'd be taking no chances either. "

From one fellow aussie to another fuck you cunts.

Yeah, because cops are shooting white people all the time. They're so fucking tense around us.

Give whichever shithead said that an extra Fuck You from me

Yeah this is murder. You can see his hand reach for and un-holster his firearm within a second of the word firearm being said. Philando's fate was drawn up at that point and that cop was going to see whatever his escalated mind told him he was going to see. He then proceeded to panic execute a man with seven rapid fire shots. It seems pretty clear cut to me and it'd be baffling that the American justice system is failing this badly, but it's probably failing as intended.

Here in the U.K. we have something called the 'IPCC' which is an independent body that oversees complaints against the police.

Some of the investigators are police but it's actually enshrined law that commissioners can't have previously worked for the police. They do the same thing for the border agency now too.

It's a bit under-funded and under-resourced and definitely needs more power but I think that maybe the US would benefit from this. I'm sure Republicans would naturally hate it and it would become a partisan issue though. Difficult to envisage anything changing for the better with the way the republicans act though.

I asked a bunch of cop buddies where they see this going wrong and they all said without exception the moment they hear "gun" they ready to throw down and are taught to take zero chances. None of em outright condone this shooting but all say at a stop like this to keep hands on steering wheel palms up and ask the officer "How should I proceed?"

What gets me is the onus is on the civilian to be in full control of their senses and know what to do and what not to do st all times yet the cop gets to assume and adlib it.

The system is broken.
Sounds almost like Castile would have been safer if he had not announced that he has a gun. How messed up is that.

cops have already shot people while handcuffed so not even that works

and while prone on the ground with their hands up

I have a friend in law enforcement who said the same thing and it ended with us yelling at each other. I think it's complete bullshit than officer who signs up for a dangerous job can be so fucking careless and inconsiderate about another person's life. Sure, be cautious and aware and ready. But the way they try to make shit look and sound like it's plausible and an unfortunate fact of the job really pisses me off. The guy openly carried his gun in an open carry state with a valid license to do so. If you're the cop and he politely and calmly tells you that, then I don't want to hear "I was scared" or "I had a family too" when you decide in 7 seconds to shoot him to death in front of his young daughter and wife.

I'm not upset with you, I'm just so upset with the law enforcement community acting like fucking lobbying politicians instead of seeing the humanity in people. This system is so broken beyond repair and if anybody says anything about it they get shitted on in evey which way. Look at Colin Kaepernick, the guy can even get a job now. I'm sick of the brush back we get when we say there's a very real problem in our criminal justice system. The "it's one bad cop not all of them" talk is completely missing the point that's it's an entirely flawed and racist system to begin with.

J Rzez's posts are a refreshing reminder of the American resistance to police reform.

When they see cops with itchy trigger fingers blowing away minorities and not being held accountable, it's the system working as intended. The projection behind his protestations is palpable - people who think like him are intentionally chosen for juries in such cases.

I assume, given the size of America, a federalised version of an IPCC would be untenable due to pure numbers and would likely have to run state-to-state with a federal oversight commission.

That being said, if its state-run that would mean Republican states would like de-fund and de-fang, as you'd noted.

Why is this though? Is there legitimate concerns over 'small government' or something? I don't really understand the benefit in having a police force that's largely unaccountable. It isn't really a 'left' or 'right' issue, is it? Its just sort of sensible.

The DOJ put out dissertation-style reports on the systemic violence and racism in the Chicago PD and Ferguson PD. Sessions came into into office, literally said "TL;DR" and said we won't be doing that anymore because it's disturbing to suggest bias in local policing.

Yes, that's what he thinks is the disturbing part.

As long as you're male that is rich, white or with the police, the law will turn the other cheek.

If you're a minority, however, expect to be thrown in prison or possibly killed without doing anything wrong thanks to the aforementioned. The system does not care.

The bias is staggering and difficult to not be completely disgusted with. Yet it continues on. Why is this still happening?
