If you own a recent Samsung TV I would highly recommend using Game Motion Plus with this game. 30fps RPGs like this are a perfect use case. Night and day difference when turning the camera.

I haven't been that hooked on the first hours of a jRPG since a long long time. Why is this so good? It's way better so far than the other xenoblades i think and i'm a fan of those.

Monolith is legit becoming my favorite Nintendo studio, what an amazing purchase.

Not sure i understand the "cancel" thing for air slash btw, if anyone wants to chime in.

Treat it like a fighting game. You press the button to initiate air slash right when the auto attack lands. you will see a flashing ring appear on your character indicating your timing was correct. Air slash does more damage if you cancel into it.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or what, but I'm excruciatingly bored. The combat just kills me, it feels like all I do is watch these guys auto attack, and them wait for my arts to be available , use them, then wait.

It's just so slow, and every enemy is a damn bullet sponge. This combat is just so dull. There is no difficulty whatsoever on normal, but I worry hard will just give enemies more health and make it even slower.

If easy is just lower enemy health I might go for that just to make it go faster.

Am I doing something fundamentally wrong, or what's going on here?

Did you JUST start the game. If so then yeah. . .that's going to be your lot until the end of the first chapter. If you're well into the game (like mid to end of Ch. 2) and you still feel this, then might want to just knock the scaling down.

Ah yeah, I'm like almost 3 hours in. So it gets better?

Pretty slow with tons of unnecessary tutorials for every single self explanatory thing kinda slows it down, lol

Ch. 2 opens up combat with character swapping (and it goes faster because well you just have more people), however you're still going to be auto-attacking with some classes as that's just the nature of the gameplay system.

I honestly have been fine with the speed (particularly on HARD where you're juggling a lot) and honestly you should get to a point where there might be TOO much going on.

. . .long and short, the game is not fast at all in the beginning and doesn't apologize for it. The tutorials also continue well into the game sadly.

No one said that HARD was impossible. It clearly isn't. It just isn't fun.

I'd disagree on the point of Hard difficulty not being fun. My 2 cents on this:

I enjoy the combat a lot, and I find that enemies die too quickly on normal for me in the Xenoblade games (outside of optional super bosses) so having their HP pools inflated is preferable for me so Hard mode it is.

If it means I need to use the lure function to pull apart packs of mobs to fight things one at a time for tougher enemy groups, that's much more preferable for me to face tanking the entire group and mowing them down without much effort. This series is not really difficult overall, maybe that changes for this entry, but I'm not far enough in to evaluate that yet.

The bonus XP system is great for balancing difficulty as well for me.

Having XP available when needed banked at the camp to get an extra level or 2 if you're feeling underpowered is great. I leave it there and just level naturally most of the time, because it's extremely easy to get overlevelled in these games.

Each to there own anyways, just my thoughts on it!

Because that's what they said. Speaking of. . .

No one said that HARD was impossible. It clearly isn't. It just isn't fun. For the subset of the population who likes getting kicked "in the testicles" (read that in Bobby Hill's voice) I'm sure it's a wild ride. For the other trillion, NORMAL is more than enough.

. . .I'd also really love to see a video of this "basic effort."

“Git Gud”.

The game on hard isn’t “kicked in the testicles” difficult. It isn’t even really all that difficult. Just requires using a little bit of brain power. I get if that isn’t your thing, but claiming otherwise is pure ignorance and a failure to understand mechanics on your end.

So far the only difference between HARD and NORMAL to me is how long the real fights (Elite, Legendary and Main) take. It's the difference of whether I'm spending 15 minutes on a fight, palms sweating, not enjoying the music or the actual badassery of combat because I'm way too hyperfocused on making sure every piece is in place, or whether I'm spending half that time, still able to enjoy the games set-piece encounters with a healthy challenge while still engaging with the games systems. If the tedium that I think comes with flat stat increases like this (overlain a fine curated combat experience) hasn't gotten to you or even developed, my absolute hats off to you.

Cool. Can we get any tips or videos other than vague "You don't know the games mechanics?" Or how about this, here is a video of a guy playing against the Ch. 2 boss, the length and tedium of which matches my experience (expect they die a few times): can you explain how they have "a failure to understand mechanics" and just need to "Git Gud."

Started Chapter 2. Zephyr class feels the best to me based on tanking keeping you engaged. I really like the auto to build up "recharge" to use your skills to fill up bar to use your big damage skill.

The very beginning of the game combat feels so slow.

Gonna try rocking Medic Gunner for a bit but it's a very passive playstyle so far. Put the buff down. Heal when necessary and then daze after a topple.

It's very rare currently that a fight lasts long enough to use their super move. Meanwhile as a Tank your super moves are far more frequent and exciting.

Can't really speak for Taion or Sena yet but Mio or rather her class Zephyr seems like a go to for players that want to have a high APM and will occasionally need to target swap for aggro.

I really like the story. Very interesting and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

Daaayum it's real good

I wanted to play on hard and it seemed great at first, but once I got to chapter 2 the same level unique enemies starting crushing me. Normals are fine, elites were a good fight but uniques were just running away with every fight.
It's crazy trying to learn everyone's classes and what fusion arts are while getting wrecked so fast. I was wondering if I would be forced to lower the difficulty level but instead I decided to run past enemies through the story until I get chain attack. Then I went back and fought those unique enemies with chain attack (and gems) and managed to squeak out wins against them. Feels great. I actually can't get my head around how chain attack works yet but that happens in every xenoblade, there's a period of total confusion before you're like "wait I can actually do this and that? Awesome!"

Game is looking epic rn

For chain attack I start with a debuff card for evasion or bypassing defense. Then go through the break, topple, daze cards. After that start the rounds by choosing attacks with low numbers (15) and gradually move up to get as close to 100 as possible. Then choose an attack that will make you go way over 100, pay attention to hero characters for this. Having unused characters will let you start another round.

The way the AI in the game is, it's best to main a defender character and switch to a healer when your HP gets low. Then to an attacker to start break and the AI will follow up. Then back to defender

Thanks a lot mate. Iguesd I'll just see how iy develops. 7 finished XC1, but I can't remember it being this slow, so I'm a little suprised I'm not enjoying it more.

Hopefully it picks up soon.

Yep, that's the difference maker for me, the length of the fights, I find them too short on normal.

If the tedium that I think comes with flat stat increases like this (overlain a fine curated combat experience) hasn't gotten to you or even developed, my absolute hats off to you.

It's not an issue for me, I guess because I'm playing the long game here. I know that fights will be probably a bit more drawn out and potentially tougher at the start of the game, but mid / late game that will change once we have our full skillsets, decent builds etc.

By mid / late game you'll probably be so OP on normal that you won't even use / see half the mechanics before whatever you are fighting is dead, hence I play on hard. I want that extra enemy health, I want to see multiple reps of chain attacks to down a tough boss.

For example, in Xenoblade 2, the full burst mechanic, on an first run through on normal difficulty, I think I did a full burst twice in the whole game, (outside of super bosses) one of those on the final boss. Every other encounter, the enemy was dead before you could even get a full set of elemental orbs up.

I've waited 5 years for another MonolithSoft game, I would rather not steamroller it on normal personally.

It's the difference of whether I'm spending 15 minutes on a fight, palms sweating, not enjoying the music or the actual badassery of combat because I'm way too hyperfocused on making sure every piece is in place, or whether I'm spending half that time, still able to enjoy the games set-piece encounters with a healthy challenge while still engaging with the games systems

You sound like you'd enjoy playing the game more on normal difficulty, why keep persevering with playing on hard then?

You do you man, whatever makes you happy. If you're not enjoying hard difficulty, just switch back to normal.

finished XC1, but I can't remember it being this slow,
In XC3 you can dash through to get better position, meanwhile in XC1 you are mostly walking and if you controlling high agility character in XC1, the character does dodge animation which kind of slows you down a lot.

I re-played XC1&2 before this game came out and I way XC3 is way faster.

This game takes awhile to get going. Didn't feel that way with 1 and 2

Gonna be hard to beat xeno 2 combat. Let's see how it all develops

The fact I can switch between characters in mid battle makes Xenoblade 3 best combat in the series and LOVED XC2 combat.

I feel in XC3 I have much more control over my party members and there is much more customization compare to XC1&2.
Is that a good thing though?

A game being slow isn't exactly a selling point.
to me combat being “fast” like action RPG is not why I play Xenoblade games.

In Xenoblade I already keep in track of lot of things, I don’t needed to be fast.

Not a a part where I can switch to characters mid battle yet, part of the 'takes a while to get going'

the games have many systems and gameplay mechanics and you get them over time. You either have the time to play a xeno game or not
But why though? I have time. I enjoy playing jrpgs, always have. This just feels artificially drawn out. Like combat is just filler. I see no reason for defending it. It's just dumb, easy combat that takes too long. What is the fucking point?

I'm not some newcomer. I've played jrpgs since the late 80s. This just feels cynical to me.

I don't have time for this shit. Please, devs, respect my time.

just the game overall I feel is a refinement in every way. Soundtrack not sure as I have only heard a few tracks.
Cool. Then I'll take yall word for it. I'm too early in and taking a bit to get going. So hopefully a few chapters in and we're golden. I loved 2's combat

This is the 4th game in the franchise and millions have been enjoying these games for a decade, I think the time for your criticism was 10 years ago when Xenoblade was declared the best jrpg of that generation. Now we are just laughing at you XenoNoobs.

Good lord, get over yourself. I played xeno1 on launch day and enjoyed it.

But this is very dull so far. Combat is boring.

Maybe the problem lies with you and your apparent inability to accept flaws in the thing you love.

Ffs, I've been playing jrpgs since the late 80s. I'm not new to the sport.

I'm just not swalloing all the crap I'm served willingly.

Tried it. Doesn't make it harder, just makes killing enemies take longer.
Yep. It's not a difficulty thing. Only longer not harder. Both xenos took me over 100 hours. Just hoping things click by chapter 2 or 3 and that combat is clearly laid out by then. Enjoying the soundtrack, characters and story so far

are we supposed to agree with your criticism of the game otherwise I'm wrong? lol wtf. you came here to a thread full of fans of the franchise and expect people that love the game to say "yeah I agree this shit is boring"???????? dude just return the game and buy some other shit

He's also a fan of the franchise, he played the original on launch day

I also played the original one on Wii, then 3ds, then switch, I'm a huge fan, and I also agree this is pretty rough and slow at the beginning. Doesn't mean it won't get better, or won't end up completely loving it towards the end, but being a fan doesn't take a way from providing criticism. No game ever is perfect, or lacking in flaws, even my favorite series

what beginning? 5 hours? that's merely the introduction for a xeno game. You should know the beginning ends after 15-20 hours of gameplay.

Play on Hard. The first chapter or two *is* slow and simple. That is par for the course for 99% of JRPGs. You would know this if you truly have played so many of them like you claimed.

5 hours in you were in gaur plains, you could see into the future, in xeno 2 the blade system was already pretty established too

Or maybe my memory is failing me. But again, I'm still hooked on the story and can't wait to keep going

I started chain attacks after 12 hours of gameplay on Xeno 2 and there's so much affinity shit on xeno 1 that you can spend 15 hours at colony 9 after the attack. Also keep in mind xeno 3 is way longer and yeah, the game gets fkn amazing and it's the best xenoblade. so just enjoy the ride, there's no need to rush a rpg like this one.
